Alabama Teacher Certification Renewal

The Basics

Alabama Professional Educator Certificates are issued on a five-year renewal cycle. When your certificate expires, you must renew it to continue teaching legally in a public school classroom. Letting it lapse doesn't revoke your credential permanently, but reinstatement requires additional steps and fees.

Renewal applications go through the AIM/ACE portal (aim.alsde.edu), and the fee is $38 per certificate — the same nonrefundable fee as an initial application. Processing takes 2 to 4 weeks, with peak wait times during the January-to-June renewal window when most certificates come due.

Six Renewal Pathways

Alabama gives you multiple options to meet renewal requirements. You don't have to complete all six — just satisfy one pathway in full during your five-year certificate period:

1. Teaching experience — Accumulate the required number of years of verified full-time teaching during the certificate period.

2. Professional development hours — Complete approved professional learning activities, workshops, or conferences totaling the required clock hours.

3. Graduate coursework — Earn graduate-level credit hours from a regionally accredited institution in your teaching field or professional education.

4. National Board Certification — Achieve or maintain National Board Certification, which automatically satisfies Alabama's renewal requirements.

5. Advanced degree completion — Complete a higher-level degree (e.g., moving from Class B to Class A by earning a master's degree) during the certificate period.

6. Combination pathway — Mix professional development hours with graduate coursework to meet the renewal threshold.

The exact hour and credit requirements for each pathway are published by the ALSDE and can shift with administrative code updates, so check the current requirements at the start of your renewal window rather than relying on what applied during your last cycle.

The New Ethics Requirement (2027+)

This is a recent change that many current teachers don't know about yet. For standard Professional Educator Certificates expiring on or after June 30, 2027, the renewal process now requires completion of 10 clock hours of professional learning in educator ethics. This is a new mandatory component enacted under the June 2026 overhaul of Chapter 290-3-2 of the Alabama Administrative Code.

If your certificate expires before June 30, 2027, this requirement doesn't apply to your current renewal cycle. But if you're renewing for the first time after that date, budget time for this training — it's in addition to whatever other renewal pathway you choose.

The Lifetime Certificate

Also new as of the 2026 regulatory overhaul: Alabama now offers a Lifetime Certificate for retired educators with 25 or more years of verified teaching service. If you qualify, this certificate does not require further renewal. It's a permanent credential.

What Happens If Your Certificate Lapses

If your certificate expires and you don't renew it within the grace period, you'll need to go through reinstatement rather than standard renewal. The process involves:

• Paying the $38 application fee for reinstatement
• Paying $46.20 for a new Fieldprint background check (your previous clearance doesn't carry over to reinstatement)
• Meeting the current renewal requirements at the time of reinstatement

Total cost for reinstatement: $84.20 at minimum, plus whatever professional development or coursework costs you incur to meet the renewed requirements. Processing takes 4 to 6 weeks for full verification.

The key difference between renewal and reinstatement: renewal keeps your certificate continuous, while reinstatement creates a gap in your credential history. Some districts factor credential gaps into hiring and salary placement decisions, so maintaining your certificate even during periods of non-teaching is worth the $38.
