Alabama Alternative Teacher Certification

Three Routes, Three Different Structures

Alabama offers three main alternative certification pathways for degree holders who didn't go through a traditional education program. They share the same destination — a Class B Professional Educator Certificate — but the entry requirements, cost, and program structure differ significantly.

Provisional Certificate in a Teaching Field (PCTF) — The most common route for career changers. You need a bachelor's degree with a 2.50 GPA (or a master's at 3.00), and a school district must hire you and have their superintendent sponsor your application. You teach full-time while completing four pedagogy courses at an approved Alabama university over three one-year certificate terms.

The PCTF has a hard limitation: it's not available for Early Childhood, Elementary, or Special Education fields. If you want to teach K–6 or special education through an alternative route, you'll need the IEC or TSEC instead.

Conditional Certificate in a Teaching Field (CCTF) — Structurally similar to the PCTF, but instead of university coursework, you enroll in a state-approved Alternative Teacher Preparation Organization (ATPO). Same GPA requirements and superintendent sponsorship requirement, with up to three one-year terms within a four-year window. The difference is your training provider.

Interim Employment Certificate (IEC) — For candidates already enrolled unconditionally in an approved Alternative Class A master's program or traditional Class A program at an Alabama university. Unlike the PCTF, the IEC covers all teaching fields including elementary and special education. You teach full-time while completing your graduate degree.

GPA Matters — Here's How

The standard GPA threshold for alternative certification is 2.50 on a 4.0 scale (bachelor's degree) or 3.00 (master's degree). Alabama does not round GPAs — a 2.49 is a hard stop.

If you fall between 2.00 and 2.49, you're not automatically disqualified. You can still pursue the CCTF route through an ATPO, but you'll need to score 5% above the standard minimum on your Praxis Subject Assessment, or complete six upper-level semester hours in your teaching field to compensate. Below 2.00, you're ineligible for any alternative pathway.

Approved Alternative Preparation Organizations

The ALSDE holds ATPOs to strict standards: they must have operated in at least five states for a minimum of 10 years, certified at least 10,000 teachers, and hold national accreditation through CAEP or AAQEP. As of 2026, the approved providers include:

iteach Alabama — Fully online, asynchronous program. You can start teaching after 8 to 12 weeks of initial training. Total program cost is $4,949 on the discounted payment plan ($5,449 standard). The fee structure breaks down to $0 to apply, $10 enrollment fee, and $99/month during coursework, with the remaining balance paid in interest-free installments once you begin your paid teaching residency.

American Board (ABCTE) — Authorized in Alabama since March 2025. Self-paced, online, no student teaching required. Limited to secondary teaching fields. One-time payment ranges from $1,450 (promotional pricing) to $1,900, or $2,682 via a nine-payment installment plan at $298/month.

#T.E.A.C.H. — A state-approved online pathway focused on rapid, self-paced classroom entry.

The cost spread between these programs is substantial — from roughly $1,450 to nearly $5,000 — so comparing program scope against your target field matters before you commit.

The Employment-First Problem

Here's the structural reality that frustrates most career changers: every alternative route in Alabama requires a school district to hire you first. You can't just enroll in iteach or American Board and earn a certificate independently. A superintendent must sponsor your application, confirming you've been hired for a full-time classroom position in your certified subject area.

This creates a chicken-and-egg situation. Districts sometimes want to see Praxis scores or program enrollment before extending an offer, but you can't fully activate your alternative certification without a district sponsor. The practical path through this:

1. Start your ATPO program enrollment (iteach/American Board allow enrollment before employment)
2. Pass your Praxis Subject Assessment in your target field
3. Complete your Fieldprint background check ($46.20)
4. Apply to districts — your cleared background and passing Praxis score make you a stronger candidate for superintendent sponsorship
5. Once hired, the superintendent requests your provisional credential through AIM

Testing Requirements

All alternative route candidates must pass the Praxis Subject Assessment in their content area ($120–$170). For the pedagogical assessment, you have two options:

• edTPA portfolio ($300) — required if you have fewer than three years of teaching experience
• Praxis PLT ($156) — available as an alternative to the edTPA once you complete three full years of classroom teaching under your alternative certificate

The Praxis PLT is also used for teaching fields that don't have a designated edTPA handbook (computer science, gifted education, health science, technical education).

Timeline: Start to Full Certification

A realistic timeline for most career changers on the alternative route:

• Months 1–3: ATPO enrollment, Praxis registration and testing, background check
• Months 3–6: Job search and district interviews
• Month 6: Superintendent sponsors provisional credential
• Certificate terms: Full-time teaching under provisional/conditional certificate while completing program requirements
• Completion of the route requirements: Submit edTPA or Praxis PLT, receive standard Class B Professional Educator Certificate

The entire process from decision to full certification typically takes 3 to 4 years, with classroom teaching starting as early as your first semester.
