Why Indiana Has Multiple Alternative Routes

Indiana faces persistent teacher shortages, particularly in STEM, special education, and rural districts. The state responded by creating several alternative certification pathways beyond the traditional four-year education degree. Each targets a different candidate profile, and they differ substantially in cost, timeline, and structure.

The common thread: alternative routes use LVIS 360 for Indiana credentialing, but the credential and requirements depend on the route.

Transition to Teaching (T2T)

T2T is the primary alternative pathway and the one most career changers use. You hold a bachelor's degree, enroll in an IDOE-approved T2T program, receive a three-year T2T Permit, and teach with full salary while finishing your pedagogy coursework.

Eligibility: Bachelor's degree with a 3.0 GPA, or 2.5 GPA with five years of professional experience, or a passing Praxis content exam score.

Credit requirements: 18 credits for secondary (5-12), 24 credits for elementary (K-6) or early childhood (P-3), with at least 6 credits in reading instruction for elementary.

Cost range: $4,700-$11,000+ depending on the provider (online alternative programs at the low end, university programs at the high end).

Timeline: 8-12 weeks to classroom entry under the permit, 12-18 months to full Initial Practitioner License.

Career Specialist Permit

This pathway targets professionals with deep industry experience who want to teach CTE (Career and Technical Education) or secondary content in their field of expertise. It's less well-known than T2T but powerful for the right candidate.

Eligibility: Bachelor's degree in a secondary content area with a minimum 3.0 GPA, plus 4,000-6,000 clock hours of documented industry experience within the last 5-7 years.

Structure: The permit is valid for two years and is renewable. You teach immediately and complete pedagogy coursework during years one and two.

Best for: Engineers, accountants, healthcare professionals, IT specialists, or other industry experts who want to teach the subject they've practiced professionally.

Online Alternative Providers

Three major online providers hold IDOE approval for Indiana:

iteach ($4,949 total, CAEP-accredited) — the monthly payment model ($10 to start, then $99/month until hired) reduces upfront risk. Fully online with dedicated advisors.

Teachers of Tomorrow ($4,700-$4,795 total) — the largest national alternative provider. Structured pre-hire coursework can get you classroom-ready in about 8 weeks. Strong enrollment support.

#TEACH ($5,530-$5,925 total) — high-touch coaching model with structured info sessions and a detailed onboarding process. Fully online.

All three programs lead to the same T2T Permit and eventual Initial Practitioner License. The differences are in advising quality, clinical placement support, and pricing structure. Ask each provider whether it coordinates clinical placement or requires you to secure a teaching position.

American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE)

ABCTE offers a certification pathway that relies heavily on exam-based demonstration of knowledge rather than traditional coursework. Indiana accepts ABCTE certification for initial licensure in approved content areas.

ABCTE is primarily useful for candidates who are confident in their content knowledge and prefer a test-driven route over semester-long coursework. The ABCTE program includes its own pedagogy exam in addition to a subject-specific content exam.

Important caveat: ABCTE's accepted content areas in Indiana are more limited than T2T's. Check the current IDOE-approved program list before committing to this route.

STEM Degree Pedagogy Pathway (SB 255)

Indiana's newest alternative route, created by SB 255 in 2026, targets STEM professionals specifically. If you hold a bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM field, you can earn an Initial Practitioner License by completing just 9 credit hours of pedagogy coursework — significantly less than T2T's 18-credit requirement for secondary candidates.

This pathway is designed to get more STEM professionals into classrooms quickly. It's the shortest credit-hour route to a standard teaching license for qualified candidates.

Charter School License Conversion (SB 204)

If you've been teaching in an Indiana charter school under a Charter School License, SB 204 (2026) creates a conversion pathway to a standard Professional Educator License. Requirements: two consecutive years of effective teaching ratings signed by a school administrator, passing content-area Praxis exams, and completion of all mandatory safety trainings.

This matters because a Charter School License limits your employment to charter schools. Converting to a Professional Educator License opens every public school district in the state.

You have a bachelor's degree and want speed: T2T through an online provider — 8 weeks to classroom.

You have a bachelor's degree and want institutional support: T2T through a university program.

You have deep industry experience in a CTE field: Career Specialist Permit.

You have a STEM degree and want the shortest path: SB 255 pathway (9 credits).

You're teaching in a charter school and want to expand options: SB 204 conversion.
