The State Fees Everyone Pays

Regardless of which certification route you take, the ALSDE charges the same base fees:

• Application fee: $38 per certificate, nonrefundable. You pay this each time you apply for an initial certificate, an additional teaching field, or a renewal/reinstatement. If your application is rejected for incomplete documentation, you don't get this back.
• Background check (in-state): $46.20 for electronic Livescan fingerprinting through Fieldprint
• Background check (out-of-state): $56.15 for physical fingerprint card processing

Minimum state fees before any testing: $84.20 for in-state applicants or $94.15 for out-of-state.

Testing Costs

Testing costs depend on your certification area and route:

For a traditional program graduate seeking an elementary K–6 certificate, the testing total is typically: Praxis ($120–$170) + edTPA ($300) + Foundations of Reading ($139) = $559–$609.

For a secondary career changer on the PCTF route, it's often just: Praxis ($120–$170) + edTPA ($300) = $420–$470, or $276–$326 if you qualify for the Praxis PLT instead of the edTPA.

Alternative Certification Program Costs

This is where the real money is. State and testing fees are the floor — alternative program tuition is the variable:

iteach Alabama: $4,949 on the discounted payment plan ($5,449 standard). Broken down: $0 application, $10 enrollment, $99/month during coursework, then interest-free installments during your paid teaching residency.

American Board (ABCTE): $1,450–$1,900 one-time payment (promotional pricing varies), or $2,682 via nine monthly installments of $298. Limited to secondary fields.

Alternative Class A master's program (university-based): Varies widely by institution, but expect $15,000–$30,000 for a full graduate degree program. The IEC route (Interim Employment Certificate) uses this pathway.

Traditional Class B (if still in college): Your existing tuition covers it — the certification is embedded in your education degree program.

Hidden Costs People Forget

A few expenses that don't appear on any official fee schedule but hit your wallet during the process:

• Retake fees — Every failed Praxis attempt costs another $120–$170, plus a 28-day mandatory waiting period. Budget for at least one potential retake.
• Transcript ordering — Colleges charge $5–$25 per official transcript, and you may need to order from multiple institutions.
• Additional score reports — If you forgot to designate the ALSDE as a Praxis score recipient during registration, ordering additional reports after the fact costs extra through ETS.
• Out-of-state document processing — The ALSDE charges a $38 nonrefundable processing fee for out-of-state document or form completion, on top of the application fee.
• Renewal — $38 every five years, plus whatever professional development or graduate coursework you need to meet renewal requirements. If you let your certificate lapse, reinstatement costs $38 + $46.20 for a new background check.

The Fee Forfeiture Risk

Both the 60-day deficiency rule and the 6-month testing rule can cost you your $38 application fee if you miss deadlines. If your application is closed for incomplete documentation or expired testing windows, you reapply and pay again. For someone on a tight budget, this makes sequencing your application correctly worth more than the fee itself.
