Alabama Teacher Certification Application Process — AIM Portal, Timeline, and Fees
The Alabama teacher certification application runs through a single digital system, and the processing timeline is predictable if you understand the rules. What catches candidates off guard isn't the wait — it's the strict document requirements that trigger rejections and restart the clock entirely.
Setting Up Your AIM Account
Everything starts with the ALSDE Identity Management (AIM) portal at aim.alsde.edu. Creating your profile generates a unique ALSDE Identification Number that links all future background checks, test scores, and applications to your record. You'll use this account throughout your entire teaching career in Alabama.
From your AIM account, you access the ACE (Certification Dashboard) system to submit applications, process fees, and track your certification status.
If you run into technical issues with the portal, contact the ALSDE Technology Help Desk at (334) 694-4777 or email [email protected]. For certification-specific questions, call the Certification Division at (334) 694-4557.
Who Submits the Application
This is the part most candidates get wrong: you do not submit your own application in most cases.
- Traditional route: Your university's certification officer submits the completed application packet, including the formal institutional recommendation
- PCTF or TSEC alternative routes: Your employing superintendent submits the application and confirms your classroom assignment
- CCTF route: Your employing superintendent requests the conditional certificate
- Reciprocity: You can submit directly, but transcripts and score reports must come from the institutions — not from you
The ALSDE rejects all candidate-submitted academic records to prevent document tampering. Transcripts must be sent directly from the college registrar's office via approved secure electronic channels. Test scores must be transmitted electronically by ETS or Pearson. Downloaded PDFs from your student portal will be rejected.
The $38 Application Fee
Each certificate application requires a nonrefundable $38 fee, processed through the AIM/ACE portal via credit card. This applies to:
- Initial certification evaluation
- Certificate renewal or continuation
- Additional teaching field endorsements
- Out-of-state document completion
- Lapsed certificate reinstatement (plus $46.20 for a new background check)
If your application is rejected or closed for missing documents, you forfeit the $38 and must pay again when you reapply.

Processing Timeline: 4 to 8 Weeks
Once the ALSDE receives a complete application packet — all transcripts, test scores, background clearance, and institutional recommendations — processing takes 4 to 8 weeks. During peak renewal windows (January through June), expect the longer end of that range.
Military personnel and their spouses get an expedited review: the ALSDE must complete the evaluation within 30 days of receiving a completed application under Act 2012-638.
The 60-Day and 6-Month Rules
Two deadlines can kill your application:
The 60-day rule: If you submit an incomplete application, the ALSDE issues a formal deficiency letter. You have exactly 60 calendar days from the date of that letter to submit the missing documentation. Miss the deadline, and your application is closed — $38 forfeited, and you must start over under whatever rules are in effect when you reapply.
The 6-month rule: If you're required to pass an AECAP assessment (Praxis, edTPA, or Foundations of Reading), you have exactly six months from the date of the ALSDE's eligibility letter to submit official passing scores. Miss this window, and the same consequence applies — application closed, fee forfeited, full restart.
These deadlines are absolute. The ALSDE does not grant extensions.
Common Reasons Applications Get Rejected
- Candidate-uploaded transcripts or scores: Must come directly from the issuing institution or testing agency
- Mismatched names: If any document (transcript, background check, out-of-state license) shows a different name from your current government ID, you must submit Form CON with certified legal documentation of the name change
- Wrong Praxis test code: Test codes are updated periodically. Taking a sunsetted code means your scores don't count
- GPA below threshold without the alternate qualification: Below 2.50 requires either a 5% increased Praxis score or six upper-level semester hours. Below 2.00 is ineligible
- Background clearance not linked to AIM: If you completed fingerprinting without linking it through the AIM portal's Fieldprint registration, the results won't appear in the TCERT system
Paper Application Option
For candidates who cannot use the online portal, paper packets can be mailed to:
ALSDE Educator Certification Section
5215 Gordon Persons Building
Post Office Box 302101
Montgomery, Alabama 36130-2101
Payment for paper applications must be by cashier's check or money order. Paper processing typically takes longer than the online route.
The Alabama Teacher Certification Guide includes a background clearance sequencer and testing logistics tracker to help you assemble a complete application packet the first time — avoiding the deficiency letter and the 60-day clock.
