How Wyoming Structures HVAC Credentials

Wyoming doesn't issue a statewide HVAC license. Instead, municipalities set their own credential structures. The local programs in Cheyenne, Casper, and Laramie use apprentice, journeyman, and master/certified-supervisor pathways; Gillette uses a separate Master HVAC Technician/Master of Record requirement. Across these programs, apprentices train under supervision, journeymen work as employees of licensed contractors, and a master or qualifying supervisor can qualify a company under the local rules.

What trips people up is that a journeyman license in Casper doesn't transfer to Cheyenne. You re-apply in every city where you want to work. Understanding the tier structure across jurisdictions saves you from wasted applications and rejected permits.

Apprentice Registration

An apprentice registration is the entry point. It is typically tied directly to your employer's contractor license — if you change companies, the registration typically resets.

Fees are minimal across the state:

• Casper: $3 initial, $3 renewal
• Laramie: $10 initial, $5 renewal
• Cheyenne: $20 initial, $5 renewal

Apprentices cannot pull permits or sign off on installations. Their field work must follow the supervision requirements of the local program. The apprentice period builds the documented experience hours you'll need to qualify for the journeyman exam.

Journeyman License

A journeyman license lets you perform HVAC installations and service as an employee of a licensed contractor. You still can't pull permits or contract independently, and the local program's supervision rules still apply.

For Cheyenne and Laramie, the reports identify four years of documented apprentice-level experience; Casper accepts a recognized apprenticeship or four years in a Casper-licensed shop. Exam pathways also vary: Casper identifies ICC G31-N/G29-N, while Cheyenne and Laramie identify ICC or WAM options.

Fees by city:

• Cheyenne: $80 initial, $15 renewal
• Casper: $25 initial, $15 renewal
• Laramie: $15 initial, $10 renewal

Laramie requires a notarized verification of experience form; other cities use their own experience-documentation requirements. Keep project addresses, permit numbers, the scope of work performed, and your supervising master's license number in your records.

Master License

The master credential is the one that matters for business ownership. In the city programs described here, a company seeking a contractor license must meet the local qualifying-supervisor or Master of Record rule.

Experience requirements vary by city:

• Cheyenne: Three years as a licensed journeyman plus four years as an apprentice (seven years total)
• Casper: Four years in a Casper-licensed shop plus five years as a licensed journeyman or master (nine years total), or a federal apprenticeship completion certificate
• Laramie: Seven years of trade experience with a notarized verification

Cheyenne, Casper, and Laramie each require a qualifying exam, but the accepted path differs: Casper identifies ICC G29-N, while Cheyenne and Laramie identify ICC or WAM options. The ICC G29-N is a 100-question, open-book test covering the International Mechanical Code and International Fuel Gas Code, with a four-hour time limit. Standard registration runs $110–$115 through Pearson VUE.

Fees for the master credential:

• Cheyenne: $100 initial, $25 renewal
• Casper: $75 initial, $37.50 renewal
• Laramie: $20 initial, $15 renewal

Gillette's Separate Track

Gillette structures things differently. The city requires a licensed Master HVAC Technician as the company's Master of Record, but the individual credential tiers aren't published with the same granularity as the other three cities. A contractor applying in Gillette must present ICC exam results and submit the application to the Board of Examiners at least a week before its monthly meeting.

Gillette is also one of the Wyoming jurisdictions that requires a $5,000 contractor surety bond on top of the standard insurance requirements.

Moving Between Cities

There's no blanket reciprocity between Wyoming municipalities. However, Casper offers a formal reciprocal license program: if you hold an equivalent active license in another Wyoming city, you can apply for a Casper credential for $5 (contractor) or $50 (master/journeyman), provided you submit proof of your home-city exam pass and good standing.

For cities without an applicable reciprocal path, expanding means a new application, new fees, and new insurance certificates naming the target city as the holder.
