Every City Runs Its Own Renewal Clock

Because Wyoming has no state HVAC license, there's no single renewal date or unified renewal process. Each municipality sets its own renewal fees, timelines, and requirements. A contractor licensed in multiple cities is juggling multiple independent renewal cycles — miss one, and you lose the right to pull permits in that jurisdiction even if your other city licenses are current.

Renewal Fees by City

Laramie is the cheapest to maintain ($35 contractor renewal plus $15 for the Master credential). Casper is the most expensive at $150 for the company license alone. Over five years, the difference between maintaining a Laramie license versus a Casper license adds up to $575 in renewal costs alone.

Laramie's December 31 Hard Deadline

Laramie operates the strictest renewal policy in the state. Every license expires on December 31 — no exceptions, no grace period. The renewal window opens November 15.

If you don't renew by December 31, your license is void on January 1. There's no late renewal option. You must file a completely new application and pay the full initial fees ($300 for a contractor license) as if you'd never been licensed. Work and permit activity that depend on the license cannot continue until you are relicensed; contact the city about any active permits.

For contractors licensed in multiple cities, Laramie's December 31 deadline is the one most likely to cause problems. Other cities use their own renewal schedules, so check each city's license terms and renewal notice rather than assuming an anniversary date. Laramie's fixed calendar date means a contractor licensed in September still faces an effective four-month first term.

Continuing Education

Wyoming's HVAC municipalities don't uniformly require continuing education for mechanical license renewal. The continuing education requirement that does exist in Wyoming applies to state electrical licenses, not municipal mechanical licenses.

For electrical credentials (which HVAC contractors need if they perform system wiring), the state requires 16 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within each three-year licensing period. At least 8 of those hours must cover code-related courses. This is enforced by the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety.

Municipal mechanical license renewals typically require maintaining current insurance, an active workers' comp registration, and continued employment of a qualifying Master — but not classroom hours. However, individual cities can change their requirements, so verify with each licensing board before assuming no CE is needed.

What Happens When You Let a License Lapse

The consequences of a lapsed license go beyond the renewal fee:

Immediate loss of permit authority. You can't pull new mechanical permits, and active permits may be frozen until the license is reinstated.

Potential enforcement action. Performing work on an expired license in a jurisdiction that catches it — through an inspection, a complaint, or a permit audit — can result in Stop Work Orders, fines, and a notation in your enforcement file that follows future applications.

Loss of reciprocity eligibility. Casper's reciprocal license program requires your home-jurisdiction license to be "in good standing." A lapsed license, even briefly, may disqualify you from reciprocal applications.

Gillette bond complications. If your Gillette surety bond lapses alongside the license, reinstatement may require a new bond application and underwriting review.

Multi-City Renewal Strategy

A contractor licensed in Cheyenne, Casper, and Laramie faces three independent renewal cycles. The practical approach:

1. Set calendar alerts for November 15 (Laramie renewal window opens) and December 15 (absolute latest safe submission date for Laramie)
2. Track each city's renewal deadline from its license terms and renewal notice
3. Keep insurance certificates current with each city named as holder — an expired certificate blocks renewal even if the policy itself is active
4. Confirm workers' comp registration is current with DWS before any renewal submission
