How to Renew Your Nursing License in California
BRN Renewal Cycle and CE Requirements
California registered nurses renew every two years on a cycle tied to their birth month. The Board of Registered Nursing requires 30 contact hours of continuing education from a provider that holds an active California BRN provider number — not just ANCC or national nursing accreditation. This distinction trips up nurses who take CE courses through nationally recognized platforms only to discover the hours don't count for California.
The base renewal fee is $190. Miss your deadline and BRN adds a $90 delinquent fee on top. If your license stays delinquent under eight years, you can still renew by paying accumulated fees and completing the required CE — but during any period of delinquency, practicing nursing is prohibited.
2025 Rule Changes That Affect Your Renewal
Three regulatory changes hit California nursing renewals starting in 2025:
Gerontology CE mandate. As of January 1, 2025, nurse practitioners whose patient portfolios include more than 25% geriatric patients must complete at least 6 of their 30 CE hours in gerontology.
CURES fee increase. The Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System fee increased from $9 to $15 annually on July 1, 2025. For nurses with prescriptive authority, that's a $30 biennial surcharge on top of the standard renewal fee.
Public Health Nurse certificates are now permanent. Assembly Bill 2471 eliminated the renewal requirement and fee for PHN certificates starting January 1, 2025. If you hold a PHN certificate, it stays valid indefinitely as long as your underlying RN license remains active. No more separate renewal tracking.
Provider Verification and Audit Readiness
BRN audits CE compliance randomly. When you're selected, you need to produce verified proof of all 30 hours — including course completion certificates showing the provider's BRN-issued provider number, the exact course title, completion date, and hours credited.
The audit requirement is retrospective: you must retain CE certificates for at least four years. If you can't produce the documentation, the board may treat the record as deficient even if you actually completed the courses.
Before taking any CE course, verify the provider's status in the BRN's approved-provider lookup. Providers can lose their approval between your enrollment and course completion, and hours from a provider that's no longer approved at the time of your renewal won't be accepted.

The BreEZe Portal and Address Updates
All renewal activity runs through BreEZe, California's licensing portal. Address changes must be updated in BreEZe within 30 days of a move — failing to update can send renewal notices and audit correspondence to the wrong address, so do not rely on nonreceipt to extend the deadline.
Tracking the Full Picture
Between the birth-month cycle, the 30-hour CE requirement with its BRN-specific provider rule, CURES fees, the new gerontology mandate, and the four-year certificate retention requirement, California nursing renewal has enough independent moving parts that a missed detail can cascade into a compliance problem. The License Renewal & CE Tracker keeps every deadline, provider verification, and certificate archive in one structured system — so renewal doesn't start with digging through old emails.
