How California License Renewal Works

Your family child care home license renews annually on the anniversary of the date CDSS originally issued it. The fee is due by the license's effective anniversary date, and the responsibility for paying on time is entirely yours — missing a notice doesn't waive the deadline.

The renewal fees are identical to the initial application fees:

• Small Family Child Care Home: $73 per year
• Large Family Child Care Home: $140 per year

Submit payment according to the instructions from your assigned CCLD regional office before the anniversary date.

The 50% Late Fee Surcharge

If you miss the renewal deadline, CCLD doesn't immediately revoke your license — but it does hit you with an immediate 50% late surcharge. That bumps a small home renewal from $73 to $109.50 and a large home renewal from $140 to $210.

The late fee isn't negotiable, and it doesn't buy you extra time. Continued nonpayment after the surcharge triggers administrative action against your license, which can include suspension or revocation proceedings.

What CCLD Reviews at Renewal

Renewal isn't just a payment. Your license remains subject to ongoing Title 22 compliance checks and CCLD inspections. Common items they check include:

• Background clearances — Every adult in the household (18+) must still have active clearance in the Guardian portal. If someone turned 18 or moved in since your last renewal, they need a completed Live Scan before the visit.
• Training currency — Your Pediatric CPR/First Aid certification must be current (renewed every two years). Mandated Reporter training under AB 1207 also renews biennially. You need at least 12 hours of annual professional development documented in your files.
• Physical plant safety — Pool barriers, locked poison storage, firearm security, stair gates, and smoke/CO detectors all get re-inspected against the same standards as your original pre-licensing visit.
• AB 495 compliance — Since January 1, 2026, every licensed facility must have a family preparedness protocol integrated into its enrollment and emergency processes. If this wasn't in place at your last inspection, expect it to be checked now.

Renewal vs. Relocation

If you're moving to a new address, you can't simply renew at the new location. A change of residence requires a brand-new application packet submitted to CCLD, with a fee equal to 50% of the initial application fee — $36.50 for a small home or $70 for a large home — plus a fresh pre-licensing inspection at the new address.

You must notify CCLD before operating at the new location. Running your daycare from an unapproved address, even temporarily during a move, is an immediate licensing violation.

How to Avoid Renewal Problems

Mark your license anniversary date on a calendar and set a reminder 90 days out. That gives you time to handle any compliance gaps before the LPA visit:

1. Run a self-audit — Walk through the Title 22 inspection checklist as if your analyst were arriving tomorrow
2. Update Guardian — Verify every adult resident is still associated and cleared
3. Refresh certifications — Check expiration dates on CPR/First Aid cards and training certificates
4. Pay early — Submit your renewal fee as soon as you receive the notice, not at the deadline

The renewal process is straightforward if you stay current on compliance throughout the year. Where providers get tripped up is treating renewal as a one-day task rather than a continuous operational standard.
