How to Verify Your CE Provider Is Approved by Your Licensing Board

Completing 14 hours of continuing education means nothing if your board doesn't recognize the provider. CE hours taken through an unapproved provider get rejected during renewal — and if you're audited after the fact, you're looking at delinquent status, disciplinary fines, or involuntary inactivation of your license while you scramble to retake courses through a legitimate source.

Why National Accreditation Alone Isn't Enough

Many online CE platforms advertise national accreditation and assume that covers every state. It doesn't. California's Board of Registered Nursing requires providers to hold an active California BRN provider number — the national American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) accreditation alone won't satisfy the board. Texas TDLR requires providers to be TDLR-approved specifically and to report completed hours to the department within seven days of course completion.

The distinction matters because each state board maintains its own approved provider registry. A course that counts in one state may be entirely invalid in another, even if the curriculum is identical.

How to Check Provider Approval State by State

California: For contractors, the CSLB doesn't mandate CE for standard general contractor renewals, but trade-specific credentials (like C-10 electrical) require 32 hours from providers listed in the CSLB portal. For nurses, search the BRN's approved provider database at the BreEZe portal — look for the provider's BRN provider number, not just the course title.

Texas: The TDLR publishes an approved provider list on its website. Search by program type (cosmetology, HVAC, electrician) to confirm the provider is currently registered. TDLR-approved providers are required to electronically report your completed hours, which should appear in your TDLR online account within seven days.

Florida: The DBPR approves CE providers through its Education section. For contractors, courses must map to mandatory structural core topics including the new cementitious cladding module required for the 2026–2027 cycle. For real estate, confirm the provider and specific course numbers through the DBPR portal before enrolling.

Miami-Dade County: Local contractors need county-approved sponsors — not just state-approved ones. Coursework must include local modules like Chapter 10 of the Miami-Dade Code and Florida Construction Lien Law under Statute 713.

Three Checks Before You Enroll

First, go directly to your board's website and use their provider search tool. Don't trust a provider's marketing claims about approval status — verify the active registration number yourself.

Second, confirm the course covers your specific license type and renewal cycle. Some approved providers offer courses that satisfy one profession's requirements but not another, even within the same board.

Third, ask how hours are reported. If the provider reports electronically to your board, the hours should appear in your online account automatically. If the provider is "licensee-reported," you're responsible for uploading proof yourself — and you'll need to retain the completion certificate for the period your board requires. California BRN nurses, for example, must retain their CE certificates for at least four years in case of an audit.

Record Every Verification
