The Triennial Renewal Cycle

California electrician certifications — all five classifications — renew every three years. The DIR may send a renewal reminder before your expiration date, but the responsibility for tracking the deadline and filing on time is yours.

The renewal has three requirements: a fee, proof of work, and proof of continuing education. If you do not meet them before expiration, the certification can expire, and you should not work in a role that requires active certification.

What You Need to Renew

Fee: $100, payable by check or money order to the DIR. Submit it with the completed Electrical Certification Renewal Form, available from the DIR website or by request from the Electrician Certification Unit.

Work hours: You must document at least 2,000 hours of industry work during the three-year renewal period. This is lower than you might expect — it works out to roughly 14 hours per week across three years, or about one year of full-time work spread over the period. Most working electricians exceed this threshold easily. The requirement exists to ensure that certification holders maintain active industry involvement.

Continuing education: Complete 32 hours of CE from a DIR-approved training provider during the renewal period. The coursework must cover current National Electrical Code updates, California-specific amendments, and safety practices.

Not all CE providers are DIR-approved. Before signing up, verify the provider's approval status with the ECU. If you complete 32 hours through a non-approved provider, those hours do not count and you cannot renew until you complete approved coursework — which can push you past your deadline.

Timing and Late Renewals

Submit your renewal packet so it is postmarked on or before your expiration date. You may submit it up to one year before expiration; do not treat processing time as an extension of the deadline.

If the certification expires, do not perform work that requires an active certification. Contact the ECU about the applicable renewal path.

If you miss the postmark deadline, the certification expires. To renew an expired certification, you must retake and pass the certification exam and pay the $200 late renewal fee; CE is not required for this expired-certificate path.

Continuing Education Options

The 32-hour CE requirement can be fulfilled through a mix of classroom instruction, online courses, and in-person seminars, as long as the provider holds DIR approval.

Common topics covered in approved CE programs include NEC code cycle updates (the code updates on a three-year cycle, roughly aligned with the certification renewal cycle), California-specific electrical code amendments, workplace safety and OSHA compliance, and emerging technologies like solar PV installation and EV charging infrastructure.

Union members often receive CE through their local's training center, which is typically DIR-approved. Non-union electricians need to seek out approved providers independently — trade schools, community colleges, and some online platforms offer qualifying programs.

Certification Renewal vs. Contractor License Renewal

If you hold both a DIR electrician certification and a CSLB C-10 contractor license, you are on two separate renewal cycles managed by two different agencies:

Your DIR certification renews every three years with the $100 fee, 2,000 work hours, and 32 CE hours described above.

Your CSLB contractor license renews every two years with a $470 fee (sole owner) or $720 fee (other structures), and has no continuing education requirement. The CSLB renewal does require active workers' compensation insurance and a current contractor bond — but no coursework.

The two cycles are independent and will not align. Track both deadlines separately.

Keep Your Certification Active

A lapsed DIR certification affects your ability to work in roles requiring active certification. It does not replace the CSLB's separate four-year experience and licensing requirements for a C-10, so track those records independently.
