The sticker price for a Wisconsin plumbing license looks manageable until you add up every fee across the full process — applications, exams, licensing, and the quadrennial renewals that never stop. Here's what each credential actually costs from start to finish.

Initial License Costs by Level

Apprentice Registration

The separate restricted learner registration renews biennially with no renewal fee.

Journeyman Plumber License

The Pearson VUE fee covers exam administration at one of the four approved Wisconsin testing centers and replaces the $20 DSPS exam fee; it is not an additional charge. If you schedule and pay through DSPS alone, the exam cost is lower, but most candidates end up going through Pearson VUE's system.

Master Plumber License

The master exam and license fee are both significantly higher than the journeyman level — reflecting the broader scope of practice the credential authorizes.

Renewal Costs

Individual plumbing licenses renew every four years on March 31. Wisconsin offers no grace period — your credential expires on that date regardless of whether you've submitted your renewal.

The "Late CE" column applies when you submit a late renewal and your continuing education hours were also completed after the deadline. Each renewal cycle requires 24 hours of DSPS-approved continuing education for unrestricted licenses, or 12 hours for restricted categories.

Contractor Registration Costs

If you're setting up a plumbing business, the individual license fees are just the starting point. The Plumbing Contractor Registration carries its own costs:

• Annual registration fee (set by administrative rule, subject to proration)
• General liability insurance: minimum $250,000 per occurrence
• Surety bond (if used instead of liability insurance): $25,000
• Workers' compensation insurance (if you have employees)

A restricted surety bond under $25,000 limits the contractor to jobs where the total contract value doesn't exceed the bond amount.

Municipal Costs

State-level costs are only part of the equation. Individual municipalities add their own registration and bonding requirements:

• Milwaukee: $10,000 performance bond filed annually
• Madison: $5,000 license and permit bond for right-of-way and public works
• Green Bay: $10,000 contractor bond
• Superior: $3,000 permit bond

These municipal bonds are separate from the state-level surety bond and must be maintained independently.

Background Check Fee

Applicants with prior criminal convictions or pending charges must submit Form 2255 with an $8 review fee for DSPS board evaluation.

The Real Cost of Getting It Wrong

All DSPS application and exam fees are non-refundable. If DSPS flags an incomplete Plumbing Contractor Registration package and you don't fix it within the three-month correction window, the application is discarded and the fees are forfeited. You must start over with a new filing, plus any lost contracting revenue during the delay.
