Exam Application Fee

Activation Fee

After passing your exam, you have 45 days to submit the License Activation Form and the corresponding activation fee:

• Contractor and RLP licenses: $150
• Technician licenses: $75

You must submit the form and fee within the 45-day window. The activation fee is separate from the exam fee — so a contractor applicant pays $150 for the exam plus $150 for activation, $300 total just for the state credential.

Annual Renewal Fee

Every NCPHFS license must be renewed by December 31 each year, either through the board's online portal at public.nclicensing.org or by paper form.

• Contractor and RLP licenses: $150 per year
• Technician licenses: $75 per year

If you miss the December 31 deadline, a $25 late fee is added for payments received after January 31. If your license remains expired for more than three years, it is retired — you'll need to retake and pass the exam to reinstate it, paying the full exam application and activation fees again.

Re-Examination Fee

If you fail the exam, the mandatory 90-day waiting period before retesting comes with another $150 re-examination application fee. Costs That Aren't Obvious

Beyond the NCPHFS fees, several other costs hit during the licensing process:

• Notarization: Every employer verification statement must be notarized. If you've worked under multiple contractors, you might need 3-5 separate notarizations at $5-10 each.
• Transcripts: If you're claiming academic hour substitutions for a contractor license, you need official transcripts sent directly to the NCPHFS. Most colleges charge $10-25 per transcript.
• Exam reference books: The plumbing exam is open-book, but you need to bring the 2018 NC State Plumbing Code and (for contractors) the NASCLA Contractors Guide in softcover format with pre-printed tabs. Budget $100-200 for the required reference materials.
• Local registration and bonding: After getting licensed, municipalities require you to register before pulling permits.
