TCERT — Alabama's Teacher Certification Lookup Database Explained

TCERT is Alabama's public certificate search and background lookup, maintained by the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE). It lets members of the public search an educator record by name or ALSDE ID and inspect certificate details, teaching areas, and the validity or suitability information displayed for that record. If you're trying to verify your own credentials before applying for a position, confirm that ALSDE has recorded a renewal, or check an out-of-state transfer after the evaluation is complete, TCERT is the public lookup tool — not the application itself.

What TCERT Shows

The TCERT database returns a public record for an educator in Alabama's system. A typical result may include:

• Certificate holder name — as it appears in the educator record
• Certificate or license details — such as a Professional Educator Certificate class, teaching area, or other credential label shown for that record
• Teaching areas and grade ranges — the subjects and grades the record identifies, where listed
• Validity and suitability information — the valid period and, where available, background-clearance or suitability status
• Issue and expiration dates — the dates shown for the specific credential; do not assume every credential follows the same term

TCERT is a read-only public lookup tool. You cannot submit applications, upload documents, or make changes to your certification record through it. Application work — including document upload and payment — happens in the ACE certification dashboard inside the ALSDE Identity Management (AIM) account.

What TCERT Does NOT Show

Several things candidates expect to find in TCERT aren't there:

Application status. If you submitted a certification application and want to know whether it has been assigned to a reviewer, whether documents were received, or what action is needed, use the ACE dashboard inside AIM and the ALSDE's current instructions. TCERT is useful for the issued public record and certain background or suitability checks, not as a complete application tracker.

Pending endorsement additions. A pending request to add a teaching field or another credential generally will not appear in the issued public record until ALSDE updates it. Check AIM/ACE or contact ALSDE for the application status.

Test scores. TCERT is not a test-score report. Score reporting follows the relevant testing vendor's and ALSDE's instructions; use the vendor account or AIM/ACE guidance to resolve score-receipt questions.

Professional development or CEU records. TCERT is not a detailed professional-learning or CEU/PLU tracker. Renewal documentation and eligibility are handled through ALSDE's renewal process and, where applicable, district records.

When You Actually Need TCERT

Before applying to a school district. A district or employer may use the public record to confirm that a candidate holds the credential and teaching area claimed. Looking yourself up first can catch an expired validity period, a missing teaching area, or a name discrepancy between your application and the public record.

After a renewal or endorsement change. Once ALSDE has processed a renewal or teaching-area change, checking TCERT can confirm what appears in the public record. If you have been told the change is complete but the record does not update, contact the ALSDE certification office rather than relying on an old result.

When transferring from out of state. Out-of-state teachers applying through Alabama's reciprocity process can check TCERT after ALSDE completes its evaluation and records an Alabama credential. Do not treat a public search result as proof that a pending application has been approved.

For district HR verification. Employers and school administrators may use TCERT as one source for verifying a credential and teaching area. Local hiring and onboarding requirements vary by district.

TCERT vs. AIM — Which One Do You Need?

These two systems serve different purposes, and confusing them is one of the most common mistakes Alabama teaching candidates make.

Think of it this way: AIM/ACE is where you apply, upload, pay, and track your account. TCERT is the public place to search issued records and the suitability information it displays.

Common TCERT Lookup Problems

Name or search mismatches. Use the site's available name fields and ALSDE ID, and add more identifying fields when the results do not provide the right person. A no-result message is not, by itself, proof that a credential does not exist.

Dates and status do not seem to match. TCERT displays the record ALSDE has available. If the validity period and status appear inconsistent, do not guess; contact ALSDE certification before relying on the result or taking a certification action.

No record found. Check spelling, middle or maiden name, and ALSDE ID if you have it. If the public search still returns nothing, ask ALSDE how to verify the record rather than assuming that no result means no credential.

How TCERT Fits Into Your Certification Timeline

TCERT is useful at two points in the certification process: before you apply (to see whether you already have an Alabama record) and after ALSDE processes your application (to confirm what appears in the public record). It can also help with certain background or suitability checks while an application is pending.

It is not a substitute for application tracking. For application progress, uploads, fees, and decisions, use AIM/ACE and ALSDE's current instructions. A public TCERT record may not change until ALSDE records the relevant result.

For career changers, check whether you have a prior Alabama record before choosing a route, and disclose that history when asking ALSDE or an approved preparation provider about eligibility. A public lookup alone cannot determine which pathway applies.
