Not Every HVAC License Requires CEUs

One of the less intuitive aspects of Massachusetts HVAC licensing is that most trade credentials in the HVAC space renew without any continuing education requirement. The state reserves mandatory CEUs for exactly one HVAC-adjacent license — the Construction Supervisor License — while the core mechanical trade licenses renew on a fee-only basis.

This surprises contractors who move from states with broad CE mandates. Here's the breakdown by credential.

Construction Supervisor License: 10-12 Hours Per Cycle

The CSL is the only HVAC-relevant Massachusetts credential with a mandatory continuing education requirement. It renews every two years, and the CE burden depends on license type:

• Unrestricted CSL: 12 hours of approved continuing education per biennial cycle, with at least 6 hours covering the state building code (780 CMR)
• Restricted CSL (one-and-two-family): 10 hours per biennial cycle, with at least 6 hours on 780 CMR

The approved courses are offered by state-recognized providers and cover building code updates, structural safety, fire protection, energy code changes, and accessibility requirements. The BBRS publishes a list of approved providers through the Mass.gov construction supervisor licensing page.

Failing to complete CE hours before your renewal date means your CSL lapses, and you lose the ability to supervise structural work until the hours are completed and the license is reinstated. For HVAC contractors who rely on the CSL for projects involving structural modifications, a lapse means turning away work.

Sheet Metal Worker License: No CE Required

Under current Board of Examiners of Sheet Metal Workers rules (271 CMR 4.00), no continuing education hours are required for sheet metal license renewals at any level — apprentice, journeyperson, or master. The board has deferred adding a mandatory CE requirement to a future regulatory cycle, but as of now, renewal is purely administrative: pay the biennial fee through the eLIPSE portal, and the license renews.

Renewals fall on the 28th day of the licensee's birth month, every two years.

Refrigeration Technician and Contractor License: No CE Required

OPSI refrigeration credentials — apprentice, technician, and contractor — renew without any continuing education requirement. The technician and contractor licenses renew every two years; the apprentice license follows an annual renewal cycle and is normally limited to two renewal cycles unless otherwise approved by the Bureau. Renewal is handled through the MyLicenseOne portal with the applicable fee ($20 for apprentice, $50 for technician, $75 for contractor).

For technician and contractor renewals, submit through MyLicenseOne with the applicable fee; no continuing education is required.

Gas Fitter License: No CE Required

Gas fitter licenses under the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters (248 CMR) renew biennially on May 1st of even-numbered years. No continuing education hours are required. The renewal fee varies by level ($40 for apprentice, $52 for journeyman, $97 for master).

HIC Registration: No CE Required

Home Improvement Contractor registration renews biennially through the MA Contractor Hub with a $100 renewal fee. No continuing education is required.

What This Means in Practice

For most HVAC contractors, the only CE obligation that requires active planning is the CSL. If you hold an unrestricted CSL, you need to budget time for 12 hours of approved coursework every two years. Everything else — sheet metal, refrigeration, gas fitter, HIC — renews with a fee payment and no educational requirement.

The risk is forgetting the CSL renewal deadline amid the simpler trade license renewals. Set a calendar reminder at least 60 days before your CSL expires to research and register for approved courses, since popular offerings fill up.
