New Jersey HVAC Continuing Education

New Jersey requires five hours of continuing education per biennial renewal cycle to keep your Master HVACR Contractor license active. That's a relatively low bar compared to most states, but the specific content requirements and the approved-provider system trip people up more often than the hour count does.

The Five-Hour Breakdown

Under N.J.A.C. 13:32A-4.1, your five CE hours must include:

• 1 hour minimum: Statutes and rules governing HVACR practice in New Jersey — this covers N.J.S.A. 45:16A and the board's administrative code
• 1 hour minimum: Uniform Construction Code (N.J.A.C. 5:23) — the UCC framework that governs how municipal building departments enforce mechanical, electrical, and plumbing subcodes
• 3 hours: Board-approved technical topics — this is the flexible portion, covering trade-relevant subjects like load calculations, refrigerant regulations, combustion safety, or system design updates

The statutes/rules and UCC hours are non-negotiable. You can't substitute them with extra technical hours. If you take six hours of technical content and zero hours of statutes review, you haven't met the requirement.

First Renewal Exemption

If you're renewing for the first time after getting your initial license, you're exempt from all CE requirements for that first cycle. The exemption recognizes that you just passed the trade and business law exams, which already demonstrate current competency.

Starting with your second renewal cycle, you need the full five hours before submitting.

Approved Providers Matter

Here's where contractors get burned: the board doesn't accept CE hours from just any training company, online platform, or trade association. Providers and courses must be board-approved.

Before you pay for any CE course, verify:

1. The sponsoring organization appears on the board's approved sponsor list (published on the HVACR Contractors section of njconsumeraffairs.gov)
2. The specific course is approved through the board's CE program
3. The course's delivery format meets the board's current requirements

Courses from unapproved providers — even legitimate trade organizations in other states or nationally recognized HVAC training companies — don't count toward New Jersey's requirements. Confirm approval before relying on the hours.

How CE Hours Connect to Renewal

Complete and document your CE hours before submitting your biennial renewal application. The renewal deadline is June 30 of even-numbered years, and the application requires verification of the approved CE credits.

If you reach June 30 without completed CE:

• You can't submit a valid renewal
• You enter the 30-day late renewal window (July 1–30, with a $50 late fee)
• After July 30, your license is automatically suspended
• Reinstatement requires a $150 fee, all past-due renewals, and your completed CE hours — plus a detailed employment certification covering the suspension period

The practical advice: complete your CE hours early in the cycle, not in the final weeks before the deadline. Provider availability fluctuates, and in-person courses near the deadline tend to fill up.

Online vs. In-Person Courses

The board's website lists approved CE courses and any delivery-format requirements. Check that information before enrolling.

Do not assume that an online, webinar, or self-paced course qualifies; verify the format for the specific approved course.

Record Keeping

Keep certificates of completion for every CE course you take. The board may require documentation showing the approved provider, course title, date, and hours when it verifies your CE credits.
