How to Renew Your HVAC License in New Hampshire
New Hampshire mechanical license renewals are processed online through the OPLC portal, and the biggest change in recent years is that continuing education compliance is now verified automatically through CE Broker. The days of mailing paper certificates with your renewal are over — if your CE Broker transcript does not show compliance at renewal time, your application will not process.
Renewal Basics
- Cycle: Every 2 years (biennial)
- Filing window: Within 60 days of your license expiration date
- Renewal fee: $180 for individual gas fitter licenses, $160 for domestic appliance technicians, $80 for trainees
- Method: Online only through the OPLC licensing portal
The renewal itself is straightforward if your continuing education is current: log in, confirm your information, pay the fee, and your license is renewed. The bottleneck is CE compliance.
Continuing Education Requirements
The OPLC requires a minimum of 6 hours of continuing education within each 2-year renewal cycle. This breaks down to 3 hours of code updates annually — covering revisions to the NFPA 54, NFPA 58, and applicable state administrative rules.
Since February 2025, all CE tracking goes through CE Broker. You need a free basic account. When you complete an approved course, the education provider uploads your attendance directly to CE Broker, and the credits appear on your transcript automatically.
The OPLC runs automated audits against CE Broker transcripts during renewals. If your transcript shows fewer than the required hours, the renewal is blocked until you complete the deficit.
What Happens If You Miss the Window
If your license expires and you do not renew within the 60-day window, you cannot renew online. You enter the reinstatement process instead:
- Individual reinstatement fee: $350
- Business entity reinstatement fee: $550
- Additional board review may be required depending on how long the license has been lapsed
The reinstatement path is more expensive, slower, and may require demonstrating that you have maintained competency during the lapse period. Working with an expired license is a violation that can trigger OPLC administrative fines under RSA 310:12 and municipal stop-work orders.

Common Renewal Problems
CE Broker sync issues. You completed a course, but the credits do not appear on your transcript. This happens when the education provider delays their roster upload to CE Broker. Contact the provider first to confirm they have submitted your attendance, then contact the OPLC Board Administrator if the sync issue persists.
Wrong CE provider. Not every HVAC continuing education course counts toward your NH renewal. The course must be delivered by a provider approved by the Mechanical Licensing Board. National online CE platforms may offer courses that satisfy other states' requirements but are not recognized by the NH board.
Curriculum mismatch. The board transitioned its propane education standards from CETP to PEP. Make sure your code-update courses align with the current PEP framework. Courses still referencing the old CETP modules may not be accepted.
