What Louisiana Requires Before You Can Teach
Every teaching credential in Louisiana flows through the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) and the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE), which processes applications through the Louisiana Educator Certification (LEC) portal at teachlouisiana.net. For standard certification pathways, the core requirements are a qualifying degree, the applicable Praxis scores, a fingerprint-based background check, and a completed LEC application with the standard $50 processing fee.
The rules are codified in BESE Bulletin 746, and they changed significantly in 2025-2026. Outdated blog posts and forum advice can steer you into expensive mistakes — registering for a retired Praxis exam code, using the wrong IdentoGO service code, or enrolling in a program before confirming your transcript eligibility.
The Non-Negotiable Requirements
Degree. You need at minimum a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution. Louisiana accepts accreditation recognized under 34 CFR 602. If your degree is from an unaccredited school, the LDOE will reject your application outright. International degrees require a NACES-member credential evaluation.
GPA. The standard minimum is a cumulative 2.20 undergraduate GPA for entry into any teacher preparation pathway. Under Act 392, programs can conditionally admit candidates below 2.20, but those candidates must then earn a 3.00 GPA across their first 12 credit hours to stay enrolled. The program-completion GPA requirement is 2.50.
Praxis exams. Standard certification pathways require content-area Praxis exams administered by ETS. You must designate Louisiana (state code 7330) as a score recipient during registration. Scores are valid for 10 years. Specific passing scores vary by certification area — elementary candidates must also pass a Teaching of Reading assessment. The 7002 subtest passing score is 138 through December 2026, rising to 147 in January 2027.
Background check. A fingerprint-based criminal background check through IdentoGO is mandatory. You must use the LDOE service code 27N5HQ — using any other code routes your results to the wrong agency, forfeiting your $55.75 fee and delaying your application by weeks.
Application fee. A $50 non-refundable processing fee applies to the standard initial certification application submitted through the LEC portal.
The Three-Level Certificate Structure
Louisiana issues three tiers of professional teaching certificates:
Level 1 is your initial standard credential, valid for three years with up to two one-year extensions (five years maximum). You earn this after completing a preparation program and passing your exams.
Level 2 is the standard renewable credential, valid for five years. Advancement requires three years of teaching experience, effective evaluation ratings, and completion of an induction program.
Level 3 is the highest classroom credential. It requires a master's degree plus five years of teaching experience, and renews in five-year cycles.
Both Level 2 and Level 3 renewals require 150 Continuing Learning Units (CLUs) per five-year period. Graduate coursework converts at 15 CLUs per semester credit hour — so 10 hours of graduate work covers the full requirement.

Choosing Your Pathway
The right entry point depends on your current qualifications:
Traditional route — If you are completing an education degree, you follow the standard student teaching path (180 hours of field experience, one-year clinical residency) and earn a Resident Certificate before advancing to Level 1.
Practitioner Teacher Program (PTP) — If you hold a non-education bachelor's degree, this is the fastest route to a paid classroom. You pass Praxis, enroll in an approved program, and teach full-time as the teacher of record while completing your preparation. You enter on a Practitioner License 1 (PL1).
Certification-Only Program — Another alternative path requiring 21 credit hours of coursework and six credits of residency or internship. You enter on a PL2.
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) — Combines graduate coursework with clinical residency. You enter on a PL3 and earn both a master's degree and your Level 1 certificate.
Each pathway leads to the same Level 1 Professional Certificate. The differences are in cost, time, and whether you earn a salary while completing the program.
Common Mistakes That Cost Real Money
The IdentoGO service code error is the most expensive routine mistake. Using a school district code instead of 27N5HQ means LDOE never receives your background check. You lose the $55.75 fee and must schedule a new appointment.
Incomplete LEC portal applications get deleted after 45 days. If you start an application but do not submit it with payment within that window, the system purges it automatically. You will need to start from scratch.
Registering for retired Praxis exam codes is another trap. On August 31, 2026, test codes 5089, 5531, and 5024 are scheduled to retire and be replaced by 5589, 5533, and 5534 respectively. Registering under old codes wastes your $120-$180 registration fee.
