The Total Cost Depends on Your Pathway

Getting certified to teach in Louisiana involves several common costs for most standard pathways, plus program tuition that varies wildly depending on which provider you choose. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive routes to the same Level 1 certificate is over $6,500 — so this is worth figuring out before you sign anything.

Common Fixed Costs

These costs apply to most standard certification pathways:

Fingerprint background check (IdentoGO): $55.75 for the standard appointment using LDOE service code 27N5HQ. Out-of-state candidates who need an ink-and-roll card scan pay an additional $39.95.

Praxis content exam: $120-$180 per attempt depending on the test code. Elementary candidates can save by choosing the 7002 Reading Language Arts subtest (~$85) instead of the separate 5002 and 5205 exams (~$220 combined). ETS also charges a 3% online processing surcharge.

LDOE application processing fee: $50 for the standard initial certification application.

Transcript evaluation: $0-$250 depending on whether your institution sends transcripts electronically (often free) or you need a NACES credential evaluation for international degrees.

For most candidates, the mandatory minimum is roughly $225-$285 before any transcript evaluation or ETS processing surcharge.

Program Costs: The Big Variable

Here is what the major Louisiana-approved providers charge:

LRCE with Reach University partnership: $900. This is the cheapest BESE-approved route to a Level 1 certificate in Louisiana. LRCE is a non-profit, in-state provider with strong district relationships. The standard LRCE program without the Reach partnership costs $4,750.

iteach: $10 enrollment fee plus $99 per month, totaling $4,949-$5,449 depending on program duration. iteach is a private, non-IHE provider. It is not eligible for federal financial aid — all costs must come out of pocket or through iteach's interest-free payment plans.

Teachers of Tomorrow: $115 per month for three months upfront, plus a deferred balance of $4,700 due upon hiring.

LSU Online (Practitioner Teacher Program): $353 per credit hour, totaling approximately $7,413 in tuition, plus a $139 LiveText fee.

All four programs lead to the same Level 1 Professional Certificate. The cost difference is program structure, support model, and whether you have access to financial aid.

Total Cost Scenarios

The scenarios below use the base Praxis registration fee and exclude the 3% online processing surcharge.

Lowest cost path (LRCE-Reach + one Praxis attempt + background check + app fee): roughly $1,126-$1,186.

Mid-range path (iteach + one Praxis attempt + background check + app fee): roughly $5,175-$5,735.

University path (LSU Online + one Praxis attempt + background check + app fee): roughly $7,778-$7,838.

Each Praxis retake adds $120-$180. Each wrong-code background check wastes $55.75. Enrolling in a program before verifying your transcript eligibility can cost $250-$299 in non-refundable registration fees if the program cannot admit you.

Hidden Costs That Add Up

Incorrect IdentoGO service code. Using a school district code instead of 27N5HQ routes your results to the wrong agency. You lose the $55.75 and must schedule and pay again.

Premature program enrollment. Some providers charge non-refundable enrollment or registration fees. If you discover after paying that your GPA does not qualify or your transcripts are from an unaccredited institution, that money is gone.

Missed hiring window. This is the biggest hidden cost. If processing delays push you past the July-September hiring window, you may spend a full year in a substitute role, resulting in roughly $15,000-$20,000 in lost annual income.

How to Minimize Total Spend

Get your background check done first — it is the most common bottleneck and costs the same no matter when you do it. Take your Praxis exams before enrolling in a program so you know your scores before committing tuition.
