Three Routes, Very Different Price Tags
Louisiana offers multiple alternative certification pathways for people who hold a non-education bachelor's degree and want to teach. They all lead to the same Level 1 Professional Certificate, but they differ sharply in cost, structure, and how quickly you start earning a teaching salary. The three main alternatives are the Practitioner Teacher Program (PTP), the Certification-Only Program, and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT).

Practitioner Teacher Program (PTP)
The PTP is the fastest route to a paid classroom position. You enter on a Practitioner License 1 (PL1), which means you work full-time as the teacher of record from day one while completing your preparation program. You earn a full teaching salary instead of paying tuition without income.
Entry requirements: Bachelor's degree, minimum 2.20 GPA, passed Praxis content exam for your certification area.
Structure: School-based mentoring from a certified mentor teacher, paired with program coursework. The program must be BESE-approved.
Outcome: Level 1 Professional Certificate upon program completion and successful evaluations.
The PTP is the right choice if you need income immediately and can handle concurrent work and coursework. The downside is that some programs front-load costs before you begin earning.
Certification-Only Program
The Certification-Only route is more structured academically. You complete 21 credit hours of coursework plus six credit hours of residency or academic internship. You enter on a Practitioner License 2 (PL2).
Entry requirements: Same as PTP — bachelor's degree, 2.20 GPA, passed Praxis content exam.
Structure: University-based coursework with a supervised residency component. More classroom instruction than PTP but less than a full master's degree.
Outcome: Level 1 Professional Certificate.
This pathway suits candidates who want more structured academic preparation before taking full classroom responsibility, or whose districts prefer candidates with university-verified coursework.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
The MAT combines a graduate degree with teacher certification. You enter on a Practitioner License 3 (PL3), complete graduate-level coursework with integrated clinical residency, and emerge with both a master's degree and a Level 1 certificate.
Entry requirements: Bachelor's degree, 2.20 GPA, passed Praxis content exam.
Why consider it: A master's degree is required for Level 3 certification, which also requires five years of full-time teaching experience. Graduate credits can also support a salary lane change under a local district schedule. In Lafayette Parish, for example, a master's adds $1,750 per year to base pay — over $35,000 in additional lifetime earnings.
The tradeoff: Higher tuition costs and longer program timelines. LSU Online's PTP program runs $353 per credit hour ($7,413 total tuition), plus a $139 LiveText fee. A full MAT at a comparable institution costs more.
What Programs Actually Cost
Program pricing varies dramatically, and private providers are not required to disclose competitor rates:
iteach charges $10 enrollment plus $99 per month, totaling $4,949 to $5,449 depending on program length. iteach is a private, non-IHE provider — meaning it is ineligible for federal financial aid. All costs must be covered out of pocket or through payment plans.
Teachers of Tomorrow charges $115 per month for three months upfront, with a deferred balance of $4,700 due upon hiring.
LRCE (Louisiana Resource Center for Educators) offers its standard program for $4,750, but through its Reach University partnership, candidates can complete the program for as little as $900. LRCE is a trusted in-state non-profit with strong parish relationships.
LSU Online charges $353 per credit hour for its Practitioner Teacher Program, totaling approximately $7,413 in tuition.
The difference between the cheapest option (LRCE-Reach at $900) and the most expensive (LSU Online at $7,400+) is over $6,500 — for programs that lead to the same Level 1 credential.
GPA Flexibility Under Act 392
If your cumulative undergraduate GPA falls below the standard 2.20 threshold, Act 392 allows programs to conditionally admit you. The catch: you must earn a 3.00 GPA across your first 12 credit hours to remain enrolled. This is a genuine safety valve, not a loophole — you need to perform well from the start.
