What the PTP Is and Why It Matters

The Practitioner Teacher Program (PTP) is Louisiana's primary fast-track route for career changers and non-education degree holders who want to teach. Unlike traditional student teaching — which is typically unpaid — PTP candidates work full-time as the teacher of record from day one, earning a full teaching salary while completing their preparation program.

You enter on a Practitioner License 1 (PL1), issued through the LEC portal at teachlouisiana.net after your program confirms enrollment and your employing district files an Intent-to-Employ form. Upon successful program completion, evaluations, and mentoring, you advance to a Level 1 Professional Certificate — the same credential traditional-route graduates earn.

Entry Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution (34 CFR 602)
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.20 (Act 392 allows conditional admission below 2.20, but you must earn a 3.00 across your first 12 credit hours)
• Passed Praxis content exam for your certification area (scores sent to Louisiana, state code 7330)
• Active Clear Credential in the LEC portal (fingerprint background check through IdentoGO, service code 27N5HQ)

How the Program Works

Once enrolled and hired, you teach full-time in a Louisiana classroom while completing program coursework. Your employing district assigns a certified mentor teacher who provides school-based mentoring throughout your program year. You receive annual evaluations under the state's Compass or LEADS evaluation system.

The mentoring component is not optional. LDOE requires documented mentoring hours and satisfactory evaluations for your PL1 to remain active and for your program to submit a completion recommendation.

Your school district's HR department plays a critical role: they initiate the permit request in the LEC portal, assign your mentor, and verify your employment and evaluation records. If district HR delays their portal submissions, your licensing application can stall — even if you have completed everything on your end.

Approved Providers: Real Costs Compared

LRCE (Louisiana Resource Center for Educators): Standard program cost is $4,750. Through its Reach University partnership, total cost drops to approximately $900. LRCE is a non-profit provider with deep relationships in Louisiana parishes, particularly in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans metro areas. The LRCE-Reach track is the most affordable BESE-approved PTP in the state.

LSU Online (LSUA): Charges $353 per credit hour, totaling approximately $7,413 in tuition, plus a mandatory $139 LiveText fee. LSU runs a structured online format with rigid 7-week terms. The university brand carries weight if you plan to pursue a graduate degree later, but it is significantly more expensive than non-profit alternatives.

Teachers of Tomorrow: Charges $115 per month for three months upfront ($345), with a deferred balance of $4,700 due when you are hired. This deferred model lowers the upfront barrier, but the total program cost is high. Teachers of Tomorrow is a large national provider; their self-paced model offers flexibility but has historically shown lower completion rates than cohort-based programs.

iteach: $10 enrollment plus $99 per month ($4,949-$5,449 total). iteach is a private, non-IHE provider, which means you cannot use federal financial aid (Title IV loans, Pell grants). All costs are out-of-pocket or through iteach's payment plans. On the upside, their online platform is flexible and designed for working adults.

PTP vs. Certification-Only vs. MAT

The PTP gets you into a paid classroom faster than either alternative. The Certification-Only Program (PL2 track) requires 21 credit hours of coursework plus 6 credits of residency or academic internship; its structure differs from the PTP teacher-of-record route.

The MAT (PL3 track) is the most expensive and time-intensive option but yields a master's degree alongside your teaching credential. The master's degree can support a salary lane change under a local parish schedule and qualifies you for Level 3 certification (the highest classroom credential) once you accumulate five years of experience.

If your primary goal is to start earning a teaching salary as soon as possible, the PTP is the strongest option. If you want the long-term salary premium of a master's degree, the MAT pays dividends over a 20-year career. The Certification-Only route splits the difference in cost and time but does not offer a graduate degree.

Common PTP Pitfalls

Enrolling before passing Praxis. You need passing scores before the LDOE will issue your PL1. Programs that enroll you before you pass your content exam may collect fees you cannot recover if you struggle with the test.

Ignoring the IdentoGO sequence. Your Clear Credential must be active before the LEC portal will unlock your application. If you start program coursework before scheduling your fingerprinting, you may complete orientation only to discover you cannot submit your license application.

Missing the hiring window. PTP requires an employing district. If you complete all requirements by October, most teaching positions are filled. The peak hiring window is July through September.
