Delaware HVAC Bypass Exam — Registration, Eligibility, and What to Expect

Who Needs the Bypass Exam

The Apprenticeship By-Pass Exam is required for HVAC licensing candidates who did not complete a formal, state-approved apprenticeship program. If you have at least seven years of supervised experience under a licensed Master HVACR professional but no Journeyman Certificate of Completion, this is your pathway — Pathway B under the Board's regulations.

Candidates who hold a journeyman certificate (Pathway A) skip the bypass exam entirely and go directly to the ProV Master licensing exam after their two years of post-apprenticeship experience are verified.

The Sequence Before You Can Register

You cannot simply sign up for the bypass exam on your own. The process has a mandatory gating step:

1. Submit your DELPROS application with the $173 fee and all experience documentation
2. The Board reviews your file at its next monthly meeting (second Tuesday)
3. If the Board approves your seven years of experience, you receive authorization to take the bypass exam
4. Only then do you register with ABC Delaware to sit for the exam

This means the Board controls when you can test. If your experience documentation has any issues — a missing Verification of Employment form, a date discrepancy, insufficient total hours — the Board defers your application and you wait another month before re-review.

How the Bypass Exam Works

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Delaware administers the bypass exam at locations in New Castle County, including vocational-technical schools like New Castle County VoTech, PolyTech High School, and Sussex Tech. The exam tests whether your field experience is equivalent to the knowledge gained through a formal apprenticeship program.

A minimum passing score of 70% is required.

The March 2025 Restricted-Specialty Update

Before March 11, 2025, all bypass candidates had to pass the complete exam regardless of which license type they were pursuing. The Board changed this: candidates pursuing a Master HVACR Restricted license now only need to pass the bypass exam section directly related to their restricted specialty.

If you are applying for a Restricted - Air Conditioning credential, for example, you take only the air conditioning section of the bypass exam. This is a significant reduction in testing scope for single-specialty candidates.

Unrestricted Master HVACR candidates still take the full bypass exam.

After You Pass

ABC Delaware reports passing results directly to the Board. This handoff typically takes one to two weeks. Once the Board receives confirmation of your passing score, it authorizes you to register for the ProV Master HVACR licensing exam — the final exam before your license is issued.

This multi-step handoff between organizations (DELPROS → Board → ABC Delaware → Board → ProV) is where candidates most often lose track of their status. Each transition involves a different entity with its own processing timeline, and none of them proactively notify the applicant when the handoff is complete. You need to follow up with the Board after each step to confirm your file has moved forward.

If You Fail

The reports specify the three-failure invalidation and one-year reapplication rule for the Master licensing exam. For a failed bypass attempt, confirm ABC Delaware's current retake policy before scheduling again.

Given the seven years of experience already invested to reach this point, a careful approach to the first attempt is worth the preparation time.
