Alabama Teacher Certification GPA Requirements

Alabama's GPA requirements for teacher certification are more rigid than most candidates expect — particularly the no-rounding policy. A 2.49 stays a 2.49, and it doesn't matter how close you are to the threshold. Here's exactly what the state requires and what your options are at each GPA level.

The 2.50 Standard Threshold

For the standard GPA threshold on Alabama teacher certification pathways, you need a minimum 2.50 overall GPA on your bachelor's degree, calculated on a standard 4.0 scale.

Traditional university program candidates face additional GPA requirements: 2.50 in professional studies courses and 2.50 in teaching field courses. No individual course grade below "C" is accepted in professional studies or the teaching field. These are separate calculations — meeting one doesn't exempt you from the others.

For alternative route candidates entering through the PCTF or CCTF, the 2.50 is calculated on the overall undergraduate GPA. For PCTF and TSEC candidates, a 3.00 graduate GPA can serve as an alternative threshold to the 2.50 undergraduate requirement.

The No-Rounding Rule

Under Alabama Administrative Code r. 290-3-2-.01(21), grade point averages may not be rounded. This is explicit in the administrative code and enforced without exception.

If your transcript shows a 2.497 cumulative GPA, the ALSDE treats it as below 2.50. This applies to all three GPA calculations for traditional candidates — overall, professional studies, and teaching field. Don't assume your university's internal rounding practices will carry over to the state evaluation.

GPA Between 2.00 and 2.49: The Alternate Qualification

You're not automatically disqualified with a GPA below 2.50. Alabama provides two alternate qualification methods for candidates whose overall GPA falls between 2.00 and 2.49:

Option 1: Increased Praxis score. Earn a score on your Praxis Subject Assessment that is 5% higher than the standard Alabama passing threshold. For example, if the passing score for your teaching field is 160, you'd need a 168. This is calculated field by field — the ALSDE publishes minimum passing scores for each Praxis test code, and you apply the 5% increase to the specific test required for your certification area.

Option 2: Additional coursework. Complete six upper-level semester hours (typically junior or senior level courses) in your teaching field at an approved institution. This doesn't raise your GPA — it demonstrates additional content knowledge.

Either option gets you past the GPA barrier. The choice depends on your testing confidence versus your willingness to complete additional coursework.

Below 2.00: Ineligible

There is no alternate qualification for candidates with an overall GPA below 2.00. You are ineligible for any Alabama teacher certification pathway at this level. The only path forward is enrolling in additional coursework to raise your cumulative GPA above 2.00 (and ideally above 2.50 to avoid the alternate qualification requirements).

The 30/18 Coursework Rule

For secondary teaching fields, the ALSDE uses what's commonly called the "30/18 rule" to evaluate transcript content. While the specific credit-hour thresholds vary by teaching field, the principle is consistent: your transcript must show sufficient upper-division coursework in your target teaching area to demonstrate content mastery.

This is evaluated during the formal transcript audit — the point at which a university certification officer (for traditional routes) or the ALSDE's Educator Certification Section (for reciprocity applicants) reviews your academic record course by course.

Career changers often assume a bachelor's degree in a related field automatically satisfies the coursework requirements. It doesn't always. A degree in engineering, for example, may not include enough pure mathematics courses for a Mathematics certification endorsement. The transcript audit identifies exactly which courses count and which gaps remain.

How Transcript Evaluation Works

The ALSDE does not accept transcripts directly from candidates. All academic records must be sent to the state through approved channels:

• Traditional route: Your university certification officer evaluates your transcripts and submits the recommendation. This is the gatekeeper — the certification officer verifies GPA, coursework, field experiences, and program completion before anything reaches the ALSDE
• Alternative routes: The ALSDE evaluates transcripts directly, but they must be transmitted from the college registrar through secure electronic channels or sealed institutional envelopes
• Reciprocity: Out-of-state candidates must have transcripts sent directly from each institution attended

Downloaded PDFs, student portal printouts, and photocopies are rejected. This policy prevents document tampering but means you need to plan for processing time from each institution that holds your records.

Master's Degree as a GPA Override

If your undergraduate GPA falls below 2.50, holding a master's degree with a 3.00 or higher GPA provides an alternative entry point. The master's degree must be from a regionally accredited institution, but it doesn't need to be in education — any field qualifies.

This matters for career changers who earned a low undergraduate GPA but later completed graduate work. The 3.00 graduate GPA serves as a standalone qualification for PCTF and TSEC entry.
