It is a tool you use to run a program you have already licensed and set up yourself.

Wonderschool positions itself as more of a business-in-a-box. Beyond the operational management features, Wonderschool offers licensing guidance, a provider directory for parent discovery, and marketing support. Their model includes helping prospective operators navigate the licensing process and connecting them with families in their area.

Both platforms publish compliance content for North Carolina (and other states), but their articles are designed to attract leads for their software — not to serve as comprehensive standalone licensing guides.

What North Carolina Actually Requires

The DCDEE does not require family child care homes to use any specific software platform. Your licensing obligations around record keeping — daily attendance logs, incident reports, medication administration logs, and enrollment records — can be met with paper forms and physical filing systems.

That said, the DCDEE does expect records to be on-site and immediately available during unannounced inspections. Electronic systems are permitted if required signatures are preserved in paper, PDF, or another graphic format. Make sure you can retrieve the records at the home during operating hours; do not rely on a phone-only workflow that leaves you unable to access them.

If you enroll in the SCCA subsidy program, you submit attendance through the NC FAST Provider Portal — a state system, not a third-party app. Neither Wonderschool nor Brightwheel replaces that requirement.

How They Compare for a Solo NC Home Operator

For a family child care home serving 8-10 children, the core value of either platform is replacing paper forms with digital tracking and automating tuition invoicing. Both do this adequately. The marginal differences — Wonderschool's provider directory, Brightwheel's photo-sharing interface — are secondary to whether the platform fits your daily workflow and budget.

What Neither Platform Covers

Neither Wonderschool nor Brightwheel will handle the regulatory steps that actually get you licensed in North Carolina. They do not:

• Register you for the mandatory pre-licensing workshop through your local CCR&R
• Process your ABCMS background checks or household member clearances
• Verify your home meets local zoning requirements
• Prepare your home for the DCDEE pre-licensing inspection
• Navigate the NC FAST Provider Portal enrollment for subsidy acceptance
• Coordinate your Clean Classrooms environmental testing

These platforms are operational tools for after you are licensed, not licensing tools that get you there.
