West Virginia HVAC License Renewal — No Continuing Education Required

West Virginia Does Not Require HVAC Continuing Education

This is the single most common piece of misinformation about HVAC licensing in West Virginia. Private exam-prep companies and online course providers routinely claim that contractors and technicians must complete annual or biennial Continuing Education (CE) hours to renew their licenses. They are wrong.

Neither the West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board nor the Division of Labor requires continuing education for renewing an HVAC Technician Certification or a standard HVAC Contractor Business License. Individual renewals are completed by submitting the annual renewal form and paying the required fee. Contractor renewals also require current supporting business credentials.

If a company is selling you CE hours for West Virginia HVAC renewal, they are selling something the state does not require.

Individual Technician Certification Renewal

The WVDOL mails renewal notifications approximately 45 days before the printed expiration date on your certification card. Annual renewal fees:

Submit the renewal form and fee before the expiration date. If you miss it by more than 15 days, the Division of Labor adds a $25 late fee on top of the renewal cost. If the credential has lapsed, check the Division of Labor's current instructions before assuming the late-renewal process still applies.

Contractor Business License Renewal

The WVCLB contractor license also renews annually at $90. Unlike the individual certification, the contractor renewal requires verifying that your supporting business credentials remain current:

• General liability insurance certificate must show active coverage meeting the $300,000 per-occurrence minimum
• Workers' compensation insurance must remain in force (or your sole-proprietor exemption must still be valid)
• Secretary of State business filing must be in good standing — if your LLC or corporation registration has lapsed, the WVCLB will not renew your contractor license
• Wage bond (if applicable) must remain active

Letting any of these supporting documents lapse before your contractor license renewal creates a compounding problem — the board will not renew until everything is current, and reinstating lapsed insurance or a dissolved LLC takes longer than simply keeping them active.

What About EPA 608?

Your EPA Section 608 certification does not expire and requires no renewal. Once you pass the exam, the certification remains valid for life. If you lose your card, contact the original testing provider (ESCO, ACCA, etc.) for a replacement — the state of West Virginia does not maintain EPA certification records.

Local Licenses Renew on Their Own Cycles

Municipal business licenses operate on separate renewal schedules set by each city. Huntington, for example, runs on a July 1 to June 30 fiscal year. B&O tax accounts require ongoing quarterly filings regardless of your state license renewal date. Missing a local renewal does not affect your state credentials, but it will block you from pulling permits in that jurisdiction until you are current.
