The Annual Renewal Cycle

West Virginia contractor licenses expire annually, and the Contractor Licensing Board does not send courtesy reminders. Missing the renewal deadline doesn't just mean a fine — it can mean starting the entire licensing process over from scratch.

The renewal fee is $90, the same as the initial application. You submit the renewal to the West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board in Charleston, and the process requires current proof of general liability insurance, a valid workers' compensation policy (if you have employees), and an active Business Registration Tax Number with the State Tax Department.

The 31-Day Trap

This is where West Virginia's renewal rules get punishing. The state gives you a 30-day grace period after your license expires. During those 30 days, you can renew by paying a $25 late fee on top of the standard $90 — but you cannot legally perform any contracting work during this window.

If your license lapses beyond 31 days, the Division of Labor treats you as a brand-new applicant. That means:

• Submitting a fresh license application with all original documentation
• Paying the full $90 application fee again
• Retaking both the Business and Law exam and your trade-specific exam ($59.95 each through Prov Inc.)
• Providing updated insurance certificates, wage bond documentation, and business registration proof

For a contractor running active projects, the delay of scheduling exams, waiting for results, and processing a new application can shut down operations for weeks or longer.

How to Avoid a Lapse

Track your expiration date yourself — the Board's mail is your backup, not your primary reminder. Set a calendar alert at least 60 days before expiration so you have time to gather updated documents.

Before submitting your renewal, verify that your business name on file with the Secretary of State still matches the name on your insurance certificates and your licensing record. A mismatch will trigger a rejection, and resolving it eats into your 30-day window.

If you've changed your business structure since your last renewal — say you went from sole proprietor to LLC — the Board may require updated documentation including a new Certificate of Insurance naming the LLC, a new or amended wage bond, and an updated Business Registration Tax Number.

What About Continuing Education?

West Virginia does not currently require continuing education hours for contractor license renewal. You don't need to take courses or accumulate credits between renewal periods. The renewal is purely administrative — pay the fee, prove your insurance and registration are current, and the license extends for another year.

Municipal Registrations Renew Separately

Your state license renewal doesn't automatically extend your local municipal registrations. Cities like Charleston, Huntington, and Morgantown have their own renewal cycles and fees. Huntington, for example, runs on a July 1 to June 30 fiscal year for its municipal business license. Make sure your local registrations stay current alongside your state license.
