Utah Electrician Background Check — Criminal Records and License Eligibility

When the Background Check Happens

DOPL reviews Utah electrician license applications after you submit them through MyLicenseOne or the applicable paper process and pay the application fee. Individual trade licenses go through a background review, and contractor applications undergo a fingerprint-based check. For individual trade licenses, that is the $116 fee; for contractor applications, $226.

DOPL conducts the criminal-background review as part of its final application review. For individual licenses, the physical license is issued and emailed within 10 to 14 business days after DOPL's final review.

What DOPL Looks For

Utah's process requires applicants to disclose criminal history and disciplinary matters through qualifying questions when those questions apply. DOPL reviews the answers and may request supporting documentation.

The Qualifying Questionnaire

When you submit your license application through MyLicenseOne, the form includes qualifying questions about your criminal history and disciplinary actions in other states. Answer these questions honestly. If you answer "yes" to any qualifying question, DOPL will request supporting documentation such as court records, disposition letters, proof of completed probation or parole, and a personal statement explaining the circumstances.

This documentation review can add time to the application process; respond promptly to any request.

If DOPL Flags an Application

If DOPL identifies a problem with your application, follow its instructions and provide the requested documentation. For testing eligibility, out-of-state equivalency, or disciplinary questionnaire issues, contact DOPL's licensing bureau at [email protected].

If DOPL asks for more information, supply it through the channel it specifies before proceeding with the application.

Contractor-Specific Considerations

E200 and E201 contractor applicants face an additional layer of scrutiny. Beyond personal criminal history, DOPL may review the applicant's financial responsibility through a financial disclosure questionnaire.

Contractor applications also require documentation for the qualifying Master, general liability insurance, workers' compensation, and business-entity registration. If an out-of-state license or disciplinary matter is relevant, provide the official verification and supporting records DOPL requests.

Preparing for a Clean Application

The simplest way to avoid background check delays is to assemble all supporting documentation before you apply. If you have any criminal history, prepare your court records and disposition letters in advance. If you have had a license in another state, request a verification of licensure showing current good standing.
