Three Routes to the Master Credential

Utah offers three distinct pathways to a Master Electrician license. Your education level determines how many post-Journeyman hours you need:

Experience route (most common): Hold an active Journeyman license and log 8,000 hours working as a licensed Journeyman. No additional degree required.

AAS degree route: Hold an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) trade degree and log 4,000 hours as a licensed Journeyman. The degree cuts the experience requirement in half.

Engineering route: Hold an ABET-accredited Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering and complete 2,000 hours as a licensed apprentice. This is the fastest path but requires a specific engineering credential — not all engineering degrees qualify.

For Residential Master, the parallel tracks require 4,000 hours as a Residential Journeyman (experience route) or 2,000 apprentice hours (engineering route).

The Law and Rules Exam Changed in 2025

Since August 1, 2025, all Master candidates — including those endorsed from out of state — must pass the Utah Master Electrician Law and Rules exam administered by Prov. This is a separate, standalone exam from the technical trade tests.

The exam is heavily weighted on:

• The Utah Construction Trades Licensing Act (Title 58-55)
• The DOPL Licensing Act (Title 58-1)
• Utah Administrative Code R156-55b
• Utah Occupational Safety and Health (UOSH) rules
• Business practices and contractor responsibilities

This is open-book, but the material is legal and regulatory rather than technical. Candidates who prepared exclusively for NEC code questions are often surprised by the focus on administrative law and business compliance.

The Practical Exam Waiver

If you earned your Journeyman license in Utah and passed the 6-module practical exam at that time, those practical exam results carry forward. You do not need to retake the practical for your Master license.

If your practical exam records aren't properly linked in Prov's system — common for candidates who tested years ago — you risk being scheduled for redundant practical testing and paying an unnecessary $85 fee. Verify your exam history with Prov before registering for the Master exam.

Out-of-state endorsement candidates who did not take Utah's specific practical exam modules will typically need to complete them.

The Master-to-Contractor Distinction

One of the most consequential misunderstandings in Utah electrical licensing: a Master Electrician license is a personal trade credential. It does not authorize you to contract with the public, pull permits, or bid on projects independently.

To do those things, you need an Electrical Contractor license (E200 for general, E201 for residential). That's a business entity license requiring a Master Electrician as the designated qualifier, plus a 25-hour prelicensure course, the Contractor Business and Law exam, general liability insurance ($1,000,000 per occurrence / $2,000,000 aggregate), workers' compensation coverage, and a $226 application fee.

Master Electricians who take side jobs or contract residential work without an E200/E201 are violating the Construction Trades Licensing Act. DOPL's Bureau of Investigation runs active enforcement, and administrative citations carry fines up to $2,000 per day for repeat or continuing violations.

Timeline and Application

For the experience route (8,000 Journeyman hours at the 3,000-hour annual cap), you're looking at roughly three years of post-Journeyman work before qualifying. The AAS route cuts that to about a year and a half.

Once qualified, submit the Master Electrician License Application through MyLicenseOne with the $116 fee. DOPL processes the background check and issues the license in 10 to 14 business days.
