Transition to Teaching is Indiana's primary alternative certification pathway for career changers. If you hold a bachelor's degree in any field and want to teach, T2T lets you enter a classroom within weeks — teaching with full pay under a three-year, non-renewable T2T Permit while completing your pedagogical coursework through an approved program.

The appeal is obvious: you earn a teacher's salary from day one instead of spending a year or more in an unpaid student teaching program. But T2T has specific eligibility gates and structural requirements that catch applicants off guard.

GPA and Eligibility Requirements

You qualify for T2T admission through one of three routes:

A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on your bachelor's transcript. This is the most straightforward path — if your GPA clears this bar, you meet the stated GPA criterion, subject to the program's review.

A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher combined with at least five years of documented professional work experience. Indiana designed this route specifically for mid-career professionals whose college grades don't reflect their current capabilities.

A passing score on the Praxis content-area exam corresponding to the subject you want to teach. This is the failsafe — if your GPA falls below the thresholds, a passing test score proves your content knowledge directly.

Your bachelor's degree can be in any field. You don't need an education degree. A biology major can pursue a science teaching license. An English major can teach language arts. A business major may pursue secondary social studies if the transcript and content requirements align and they pass the corresponding content exam.

How the T2T Permit Works

Once an approved T2T program admits you, the program and your hiring school corporation jointly request a T2T Permit through LVIS 360. This permit is:

Three years long and non-renewable. You must complete all program requirements within this window. If you don't finish in time, you lose the permit with no extension.

Employer-specific. The permit is tied to the school corporation that sponsors it. If you change districts, the new corporation must submit a new permit request.

Full teaching authority. You're not a substitute or an aide — you're the teacher of record with full classroom responsibilities and salary.

Credit Hour Structure

T2T programs follow state-mandated credit caps:

Secondary licenses (5-12): maximum 18 credit hours of pedagogy coursework.

Elementary licenses (K-6) and early childhood (P-3): maximum 24 credit hours, with at least 6 credits dedicated to reading instruction.

These caps exist to keep programs from inflating requirements and costs. Some programs try to bundle additional courses as "recommended" beyond the state cap — you don't need them for licensure.

Approved T2T Providers and What They Cost

Indiana's approved T2T provider list includes both traditional universities and online alternative certification programs. Costs vary dramatically:

University T2T programs (Ball State, IU, Purdue, Goshen College, Grace College, Bethel University, University of Evansville) typically run $7,700 to $11,000+ for the full program. You get access to campus resources, faculty advisors, and established school partnerships for clinical placements.

Online alternative providers (iteach, Teachers of Tomorrow, #TEACH) range from $4,700 to $5,925. These programs offer more flexibility in scheduling and often have faster enrollment timelines — some advertise classroom entry within 8 weeks.

The cheapest option isn't always the best fit. University programs tend to have deeper relationships with local school districts for job placement. Online programs offer speed and flexibility. Your choice depends on whether you prioritize cost, timeline, or institutional support.

The Testing Requirement

T2T candidates must pass the same Praxis exams as traditional-route teachers:

Your subject-specific content assessment (fees vary by exam; many secondary exams cost $120 per attempt) — this verifies you know the material you'll teach.

The Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) pedagogy exam ($146) — this covers instructional theory, classroom management, and assessment.

For K-6 and special education candidates: the Praxis 5205 Teaching Reading: Elementary ($156) — mandatory under Indiana's Science of Reading law since July 2025.

Register through the ETS Praxis portal with Indiana's state recipient code 7238 so your scores transmit directly to LVIS 360.

Realistic Timeline

Enrollment to classroom entry: 8 to 12 weeks (faster with online providers, slightly longer with university programs that have fixed cohort start dates).

Common Mistakes That Delay T2T Candidates

Submitting transcripts before your degree is officially conferred. LVIS rejects applications where the transcript shows "in progress" instead of a posted degree. Wait for the final, conferred transcript.

Getting an online-only CPR certification. Indiana requires hands-on, mannequin-based training from an IDOE-approved provider. The $25 online CPR card you found on YouTube won't work.

Failing to complete all four safety trainings before applying. CPR, suicide prevention, human trafficking, and child abuse/neglect certifications must all be uploaded to LVIS before your application can advance.
