The Landscape of Approved T2T Programs

Indiana maintains a state-approved list of educator preparation programs authorized to offer Transition to Teaching pathways. These range from major research universities to fully online alternative certification providers, and the differences in cost, structure, and support are significant.

Every approved T2T program leads to the same credential: an Initial Practitioner License issued through LVIS 360. The destination is identical — the route there is where programs diverge.

University-Based T2T Programs

Indiana's public and private universities offer T2T programs embedded in their schools of education. The main advantage is institutional depth: established school district partnerships for clinical placements, in-person faculty advising, and access to campus resources.

Ball State University — one of the largest teacher preparation programs in the state. Offers secondary and elementary T2T cohorts with strong ties to east-central Indiana school corporations. Clinical placements are coordinated through their Office of Teacher Education Services.

Indiana University (multiple campuses) — IU Bloomington, IU Indianapolis, IU Kokomo, and IU Southeast each offer T2T pathways. The Bloomington campus has the most comprehensive program with CAEP accreditation and extensive school partnerships. IU Kokomo runs a focused T2T track popular with career changers in north-central Indiana.

Purdue University — offers T2T through its College of Education with a strong STEM pipeline, particularly for candidates with engineering or science backgrounds entering secondary teaching.

Grace College, Goshen College, Bethel University, University of Evansville — private institutions with smaller cohorts and more personalized advising. Tuition is higher but class sizes are smaller, and some offer scholarship support specifically for T2T candidates.

University program costs typically run $7,700-$11,000+ for the full T2T sequence. Start dates are usually fixed to academic semesters, so you may wait a few weeks to join the next cohort.

Online Alternative Certification Providers

These programs are IDOE-approved and designed for maximum flexibility. They let career changers start teaching within weeks rather than waiting for a university cohort.

iteach — a CAEP-accredited online program with a distinctive pricing model. You pay $10 to start, then $99/month until you're hired by a school corporation. Total program cost is approximately $4,949. The monthly payment structure reduces upfront financial risk.

Teachers of Tomorrow — the largest alternative certification provider nationally. Their Indiana program costs $4,700-$4,795 total. They offer a structured online curriculum with pre-hire coursework designed to get you classroom-ready in about 8 weeks. Their enrollment process is streamlined, with dedicated advisors who handle much of the LVIS paperwork coordination.

#TEACH (Training Educators for the Advancement of Classroom Horizons) — fully online with high-touch coaching. Total costs range from $5,530-$5,925. They offer structured info sessions and a detailed onboarding process.

The tradeoff with online providers is clinical placement coordination. University programs have established school partnerships; ask online providers whether they coordinate placement or require you to secure your own teaching position.

Credit Hour Requirements (State-Mandated)

The IDOE caps T2T coursework to prevent programs from padding requirements:

Secondary (5-12): maximum 18 credit hours of pedagogy.

Elementary (K-6) and Early Childhood (P-3): maximum 24 credit hours, with at least 6 credits in dedicated reading instruction.

Some programs bundle additional "recommended" courses beyond these caps. You are not required to complete anything beyond the state maximums for licensure. If a program tells you their 28-credit sequence is mandatory for an Indiana license, check the state rules — the cap is 18 or 24.

Which Program Type Fits Your Situation

Choose a university T2T program if: you're located near a campus, want structured clinical placement support, prefer in-person or hybrid instruction, and can afford the higher tuition. University programs also carry more weight with some school districts during hiring, though this advantage has narrowed as online providers have become more established.

Choose an online alternative provider if: you need flexibility around a current job, want the fastest possible path to a classroom, are comfortable finding your own teaching position, and want to minimize upfront costs. The monthly payment models reduce financial risk if you change your mind early in the program.

Regardless of provider: you'll take the same Praxis exams, complete the same safety trainings, pass the same background checks, and submit the same LVIS 360 application. The license issued is identical.

Making the Decision

The cost difference between the cheapest online provider ($4,700) and the most expensive university program ($11,000+) is significant, but it doesn't tell the full story. Factor in clinical placement support, job placement rates, advising quality, and whether you need schedule flexibility.

Request enrollment information from at least two programs in different categories before committing. Every approved program is listed in the IDOE's official Educator Preparation Program directory.
