Tennessee Electrician License Application: CORE Portal Process and Required Documents

Everything Goes Through the CORE Portal

Both state-level electrical credentials in Tennessee — the Limited Licensed Electrician (LLE) and the Electrical Contractor (CE) — are applied for and managed through the CORE online portal at core.tn.gov. CORE is the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance's licensing and permitting system, and it handles applications, renewals, permit purchases, and inspection scheduling.

You'll create a single CORE account that ties to your individual or business identity. Once your license is issued, the same account is where you'll manage renewals, purchase state electrical permits (for LLE holders working in state-inspected areas), and update your business information.

LLE Application Package

The LLE application requires these components, all submitted through CORE:

LLE exam eligibility and result: The Board must approve the initial LLE application before you schedule the LLE Trade Exam through Prov. After you pass, the exam result is recorded with the application.

Experience Sheet for LLE: The Board's official form documenting your practical electrical experience. This requires a detailed chronological breakdown of the electrical installation tasks you've performed. Download it from the Board for Licensing Contractors' forms page on tn.gov.

Reference Sheet for LLE: Also from the Board's forms page. This must be completed and signed by a licensed electrical contractor, a past employer, or a building code official who has personally inspected your work. Family members are explicitly prohibited from serving as references.

Government-issued photo ID: Driver's license or passport.

Social Security Number or proof of lawful presence: Required for identity verification.

Application fee: $50, non-refundable.

The Board reviews the complete package before issuing the license. Processing typically takes about two weeks for applications that have every document in order.

CE Contractor Application Package

The CE application is more complex. Through CORE, you'll submit:

• Passing scores for both the CE Trade Exam and the Tennessee Business and Law Exam
• Experience documentation for the Qualifying Agent (letters of reference from past clients, employers, or inspectors)
• CPA-prepared financial statement (reviewed for limits up to $3M, audited for higher) OR the Board-approved Contractor's Surety Bond form (at least 50% of requested monetary limit)
• General liability insurance certificate
• Workers' compensation insurance certificate (or exemption filing)
• Proof of active business registration with the Tennessee Secretary of State
• Application fee: $250, non-refundable

The Board reviews CE applications more thoroughly and requires a QA interview if the designated Qualifying Agent has fewer than three years of documented experience.

Common Rejection Triggers

Applications get returned for issues that are entirely preventable:

Unsigned or incomplete reference sheets: Every signature line must be filled. For the state LLE application, references from family members are prohibited. If a reference leaves sections blank, the Board sends it back.

Expired financial statements: CPA financial statements must be less than 12 months old at the time of submission. If your application processing stretches past that date, you'll need a new statement.

Inactive Secretary of State registration: Your business entity must show as "Active" with the Tennessee Secretary of State at the time of application. If your annual report is overdue or your registration has lapsed, the Board will reject the package.

Insurance certificate naming errors: The certificates must name the correct legal entity — the exact business name registered with the Secretary of State. Mismatches between your insurance certificate, your state registration, and your CORE application trigger rejections.

Missing exam scores: If Prov hasn't transmitted your passing scores to the Board by the time your application is reviewed, it stalls. Confirm score transmission after passing.

Each rejection costs you time — often weeks to months — and the application fee is gone regardless.

After Your License Is Issued

Once the Board issues your LLE or CE license through CORE, you can:

• Purchase state electrical permits (LLE holders in state-inspected areas)
• For LLE work in state-inspected areas, request inspections through the Division of Fire Prevention
• Register your credential with local codes offices (required before pulling local permits)
• Track your renewal date and submit renewal applications
