LLE Costs Are Straightforward — CE Costs Add Up Fast

Tennessee's electrician licensing costs range from about $107 for a basic LLE permit to several thousand dollars for a full CE contractor license. The difference comes down to the financial documentation, insurance, and business registration that the contractor path demands.

Every fee in the state system is non-refundable. If the Board rejects your application because of an incomplete experience sheet or a missing insurance certificate, you lose your application fee and start over. Limited Licensed Electrician (LLE) Costs

The LLE is the most affordable state credential:

There's no insurance requirement from the Board for the LLE, no CPA financial statements, and no continuing education for renewal. The $50 renewal fee every two years is all you need to maintain the license.

However, many LLE holders carry general liability insurance voluntarily because property owners and general contractors often require it before allowing electrical work on their sites. That's a business decision, not a licensing requirement.

Electrical Contractor (CE) Costs

The CE license involves significantly more upfront investment:

The CPA financial statement is often the biggest surprise. A reviewed statement for a small operation might cost $500–$1,500, but audited statements required for monetary limits above $3,000,000 can run $3,000 or more. The new surety bond option (effective July 2026) helps lower this barrier — a bond at 50% of the requested monetary limit may cost less than the annual CPA fee, depending on the contractor's credit and limit.

Biennial renewal: $200 plus updated financial documentation. Contractors with limits under $1.5 million can now submit a self-prepared balance sheet instead of a CPA-compiled statement (as of November 2025), which reduces ongoing costs significantly.

Local License Costs

Municipal licensing fees vary by city and are paid separately from state fees:

Local fees are in addition to any state credentials. An electrician who holds both a state CE license and a Nashville local journeyman card pays renewal fees to both the state and Davidson County on their respective schedules.

The Hidden Cost: Application Failures

The most expensive line item in Tennessee electrical licensing is often the one people don't plan for — a rejected application. Since all state fees are non-refundable, an application that gets bounced for an unsigned reference letter, an expired insurance certificate, or an incorrect classification selection costs you the full application fee ($50 LLE, $250 CE) plus months of delay as you correct and resubmit.
