The NYC Department of Buildings structures its master plumber testing as a sequential two-part process — written first, practical second. You cannot schedule both at the same time, and the process has fixed deadlines between the two parts. 5. Book your exam date at an available Pearson VUE testing center

Passing score: 70%. The DOB sends your score notification through DOB NOW after the testing vendor processes results.

Practical Exam Details

The practical exam tests hands-on pipe-joining, pressure testing, and system layout skills. It's administered separately from the written exam and requires its own application and fee.

Critical deadlines:

• First-time applicants must apply for the practical exam within 60 days of receiving their written passing notice
• The practical exam must be completed within 24 months of the written exam pass date
• If you fail the practical, you must wait a minimum of 90 days before reapplying
• Your retake still must fall within the original 24-month window

Registration: Submit a practical exam application through DOB NOW and pay the $530 fee (also non-refundable).

That 60-day initial window is the deadline most candidates overlook. If you pass the written exam in March, submit the practical application within 60 days of the written passing notice rather than waiting until June.

Total Exam Cost Breakdown

These fees cover the applications and testing only. The background investigation ($500), license issuance ($200), and seal ($50) are separate charges that come after you pass both exams, bringing the total licensing cost to $1,865.

What Happens After You Pass Both Exams

Passing the practical exam doesn't automatically grant you a license. You have one year from your practical pass date to submit a complete background investigation packet through DOB NOW. This packet includes your LIC51 application, LIC62 physical exam form, notarized EVFs, certified SSA History of Earnings, and business entity documentation — plus a $500 fee.

The background phase is where most rejections happen. If your SSA earnings don't match the employer names on your EVFs, or if there are unexplained gaps in your work history, the DOB will flag the application. At that point, you've already spent $1,115 in exam fees with no license to show for it.
