When Reinstatement Applies
New Hampshire mechanical licenses — gas fitter, plumber, domestic appliance technician, and mechanical business entity — expire on a biennial cycle. Under Plc 308.05, the renewal window opens no more than 60 days before expiration, and the renewal application is due by the expiration date. Miss that deadline, and the license is expired and the applicable reinstatement or renewal procedures apply.
Reinstatement is a separate process from renewal, and the required documentation depends on how long the license has been expired. The distinction matters because performing mechanical work on an expired license carries the same penalties as working without a license at all — including potential OPLC enforcement action and municipal stop-work orders.
Reinstatement Fees
The applicable fee depends on the license type; for many individual licenses, reinstatement uses the initial amount:

For an individual license expired more than one year, Mec 405.01(b) directs the applicant to apply for initial licensure under Plc 304 and pay the applicable Plc 1002.25 fee. If the OPLC identifies deficiencies, it issues a written notice within the applicable 30-day initial-review period and gives you 60 days to provide the requested material; failure to do so can result in denial and forfeiture of processing fees.
What the OPLC Requires
A reinstatement application isn't a rubber stamp. The board treats it as a partial re-evaluation of your qualifications, particularly if the license has been expired for an extended period.
Continuing education compliance. If an individual license has been expired for no more than one year, Mec 405.01(a) requires compliance with all continuing-education requirements for that license type as part of reinstatement. If the lapse exceeds one year, Mec 405.01(b) directs you to the initial-licensure process instead; confirm the documentation OPLC wants for your credential.
Business documentation. Business applicants must provide proof of good standing with the Secretary of State, proof of liability insurance, and a list of current licensed employees with their New Hampshire license numbers. Confirm the current reinstatement or renewal packet with the OPLC.
Criminal history update. If any convictions occurred during the lapse period, you must disclose them with supporting documentation from the New Hampshire Division of State Police.

The CE Broker Complication
Here's where reinstatement gets tricky for technicians whose licenses lapsed before the February 2025 CE Broker mandate. Under the current system, CE Broker tracks continuing-education credits electronically, so keep course certificates and ask the OPLC how to document any credits that are not visible in the system.
If you need to prove CE compliance for periods before CE Broker integration, gather documentation directly from your course providers and confirm with the OPLC Licensing Division how it should accompany your reinstatement application.
How Long Reinstatement Takes
The OPLC's initial review can identify deficiencies within 30 days, and you then have 60 days to respond. The rules provide for a written decision within 60 days of receiving a completed packet and any requested documents, so timing depends on whether the documentation is complete.
During the processing period, your license remains expired. You cannot perform licensed mechanical work — even if your application is pending — until you receive written confirmation of reinstatement from the OPLC.

Avoiding Reinstatement in the First Place
Set a calendar reminder 90 days before your license expiration date.
