Does Michigan Require a Surety Bond?

However, two caveats apply:

Local requirements vary. Some municipalities may require proof of bonding as part of their local contractor registration process, particularly for commercial work or public-sector contracts. Check with the specific building department before assuming you're bond-free everywhere you plan to work.

Insurance isn't optional in practice. While LARA itself doesn't mandate insurance to issue a license, local building departments require it to register your license and activate your permit access. Standard requirements include commercial general liability coverage (typically $500,000-$1,000,000 minimum) and workers' compensation coverage when Michigan's thresholds apply — for example, one or more employees regularly working 35 hours a week for 13 weeks or longer in the preceding 52 weeks, or three or more employees at one time. These aren't bonds, but they serve a similar protective function for consumers.

The Practical Impact

For most applicants, the character-review component of the Michigan mechanical licensing process is straightforward: disclose everything, provide documentation for any issues, and let LARA make its determination. The process adds a few weeks to the application review timeline — LARA's standard processing window runs 4-8 weeks during peak construction season — but doesn't require any separate filing or fee beyond the standard $300 application cost.
