Michigan HVAC License Cost

One of the first questions any Michigan HVAC tech asks before going independent: how much does the license actually cost? The answer depends on how many classifications you pursue and how many municipalities you register in, but the baseline state fees are predictable.

State Application and Licensing Fees

The LARA Mechanical Contractor application fee is $300, paid upfront when you submit through the MiPLUS portal. This fee is non-refundable — if your application gets rejected for incomplete experience documentation, you lose the money and restart from zero.

That $300 covers your initial license for the remainder of the current three-year renewal cycle. Michigan's mechanical contractor licenses run on fixed triennial periods, so your first license term may be shorter than three full years depending on when in the cycle you apply.

PSI Exam Fees

After LARA approves your application, you pay exam fees directly to PSI Services:

• HVAC Equipment (Classification B): $100
• All other classifications (Ductwork, Refrigeration, Hydronic, Fire Suppression, etc.): $50 each

A typical residential contractor pursuing Classifications B and C pays $150 total in exam fees. Adding a third classification like Refrigeration (D) brings the total to $200.

Adding Classifications Later

If you already hold an active license and want to add a new classification, the state fee is pro-rated based on your position in the renewal cycle:

• Year 1 of the cycle: $300
• Year 2: $200
• Year 3: $100

Plus the $50 exam fee for each new classification test.

Local Municipal Registration

State law caps the mechanical-license registration fee at $15 per jurisdiction under MCL 339.5817. For example, Grand Rapids and Warren are listed at $15, while Sterling Heights is listed at $16; confirm whether any amount above $15 is a separate administrative charge.

You need to register in every municipality where you plan to pull permits, so five cities would total $75 at the statutory mechanical-registration rate; a separate local administrative charge could make the final total higher.

Trainee Registration

If you're still accumulating the 6,000 hours of experience required for a standard classification, you can register as a Mechanic Trainee for $20. This is a one-time, non-renewable registration that allows you to perform hands-on mechanical work under the direct supervision of a licensed contractor. It doesn't grant any independent contracting authority.

Triennial Renewal

Mechanical contractor licenses renew on a triennial cycle. Check LARA's current fee schedule for the renewal fee, and complete 6 hours of approved continuing education during each renewal cycle. CE course costs vary by provider but typically run $50–$150.

Insurance and Business Costs

These aren't licensing fees, but they're unavoidable costs of operating legally:

• LLC formation with the Michigan Secretary of State: $50
• Commercial general liability insurance: Most building departments require at least $500,000 in coverage. Annual premiums for a small HVAC operation typically start around $1,500–$3,000 depending on your classification scope
• Workers' compensation insurance: May be required when you employ workers; confirm Michigan's employer triggers. Costs vary by payroll and classification code

Total First-Year Estimate

For a new contractor pursuing Classifications B and C:

For a solo operator, adding the general-liability premium estimate above brings the first-year total to roughly $2,000–$3,500. If Michigan's employer triggers require workers' compensation for your business, budget that separately. That's a fraction of the $5,000–$25,000 in fines you'd face for working without a license.
