Renewal Deadlines by License Type

Michigan electrical licenses don't all expire on the same schedule:

• Apprentice registration: Expires annually on August 31. Miss this and your registration lapses, so hours worked during the gap may be disqualified from your 8,000-hour journeyman requirement.
• Journeyman and master licenses: Expire annually on December 31. March 1 is the grace deadline; confirm your current license status and work authorization with LARA before relying on this window.
• Contractor license: Expires every three years on December 31.

Renew through LARA's online Accela portal. The process is straightforward once your continuing education is reported -- approved providers submit completion data directly to LARA, so your renewal should be ready to process without manual transcript uploads.

Continuing Education Requirements

Michigan doesn't require CE hours on a fixed annual cycle. Instead, the requirement triggers when LARA adopts a new electrical code cycle -- journeymen and master electricians must then complete an approved continuing education course covering the code changes within twelve months of adoption.

In practice, this means a 15-hour code update course covering the latest National Electrical Code revisions and the Michigan Electrical Code Rules Part 8. The frequency depends on how often Michigan adopts new NEC editions.

The course must be offered by a LARA-approved provider. When you complete it, the provider reports your hours directly to the state. Verify that your completion shows up in Accela before your renewal deadline -- provider reporting delays are not uncommon, and you don't want to be blocked from renewing because of a data lag.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

Grace period (Jan 1 -- Mar 1): March 1 is the grace deadline. Confirm the current renewal status and work authorization with LARA before relying on this window.

After March 1: Contact LARA BCC for the current late-renewal or reinstatement process before working under the license. Do not assume that a renewal, late fee, or exam requirement applies without confirming the current process with LARA.

Protecting Your License Status

The most common renewal failure isn't forgetting the deadline -- it's having unresolved issues that block the renewal. LARA can bar you from renewing if you have outstanding fines, unresolved administrative penalties, or unpaid fees of any amount.

Before renewal season:

1. Check your Accela account for any outstanding notices or holds.
2. Verify that your approved CE provider has reported your course completion.
3. Make sure your contact information in the LARA system is current -- renewal notices go to the address on file.

For contractor licenses, verify that your qualifying Master of Record is still actively employed and that their individual license is also current. A lapsed master license invalidates the contractor credential.
