Michigan Electrician License Reinstatement: Late Renewal and Lapsed License Recovery

Missing the December 31 renewal deadline for a Michigan journeyman or master electrician license does not immediately destroy your career — but you should not work under an expired license. LARA has a defined renewal and lapsed-license process, and the current steps depend on your license status and how long it has been inactive.

The Grace Period

Journeyman and Master licenses expire on December 31 each year. March 1 is the grace deadline; confirm your current license status and work authorization with LARA before relying on this window.

After the Grace Period

After March 1, contact LARA BCC for the current late-renewal or reinstatement process before working under the license. Do not assume that a renewal, late fee, or exam requirement applies without confirming the current process with LARA.

The longer your license has been lapsed, the more documentation LARA may require. Confirm the applicable process with LARA before submitting a new application.

The Continuing Education Catch

Michigan requires journeymen and master electricians to complete an approved code-update course within twelve months after the state adopts a new electrical code cycle. Ask LARA whether any CE due during your lapse must be completed before your license status is restored.

Lapsed for Multiple Years

If your license has been lapsed for an extended period, contact LARA about whether the current process is reinstatement or relicensure and what documentation it requires. Do not assume that retaking the licensing exam is required without confirmation.

Contractor License Implications

If the qualifying master is no longer active, the contractor must notify LARA, and the contractor license can be placed on hold or suspended until the master is renewed or a replacement is designated.

Avoiding Lapse in the First Place

Set a calendar reminder for November — the December 31 deadline arrives quickly, and LARA does not always send renewal reminders. Renew through the Accela Citizen Access Portal before the deadline, and confirm your renewal fee payment processed successfully.
