The Basics of Renewal

Only the Professional License renews — it's valid for five years and cycles indefinitely as long as you document 150 Professional Development Points (PDPs) each period. The renewal fee is $100 for your primary license plus $25 for each additional field. Submit through ELAR, where you certify that you've maintained your Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP).

You don't need to upload PDP documentation with every renewal. DESE conducts random audits, and only selected educators are asked to submit supporting records. But you should absolutely keep detailed logs — an audit may require you to substantiate the points claimed.

How PDPs Work

The 150-point requirement has specific distribution rules across categories. Your IPDP, developed with input from your district, outlines which areas you'll target. At least 15 PDPs must address content, 15 pedagogy, 15 SEI or ESL, and 15 effective schooling for students with disabilities and diverse learning styles; the remaining 90 may be electives or additional content or pedagogy.

PDPs come from a range of activities: graduate courses, professional workshops, conferences, mentoring, curriculum development, and independent study. Not all activities earn points at the same rate, and the conversion rules changed significantly in June 2026.

The 2026 Credit Conversion Rule

As of June 8, 2026, DESE distinguishes between two types of graduate credits for PDP conversion:

Degree-eligible graduate credits — courses that a college or university accepts directly toward one of its own graduate degree programs — convert at 22.5 PDPs per semester hour. A standard 3-credit course earns you 67.5 PDPs, nearly half your total requirement in one course.

Non-degree-eligible graduate credits — courses designed for professional development, salary-lane advancement, or license renewal that don't count toward an active degree — now convert at only 7.5 PDPs per semester hour. That same 3-credit course earns only 22.5 PDPs.

This is a three-fold reduction for the non-degree courses that many teachers have relied on for convenient PDP accumulation. If you've been taking graduate-level PD courses assuming the old conversion rate, recalculate immediately. The distinction between "degree-eligible" and "non-degree-eligible" depends on the offering institution's classification, not on whether you're personally enrolled in a degree program.

Confirm the exact degree-eligibility status of every course with both your provider and your district HR office before counting the points.

Renewal Timeline and Process

The five-year renewal cycle runs from your license issue date. You can submit a renewal application in ELAR before the expiration date using these steps:

1. Log into your ELAR account and check your current license status and expiration date
2. Complete the renewal application form
3. Certify that your IPDP is current and that you've accumulated at least 150 PDPs
4. Pay the $100 fee ($25 for additional fields) — e-check avoids the convenience fee on card payments

If your Professional License expires without renewal, it becomes inactive. Teaching under an inactive license makes it invalid — a distinction that matters for reinstatement. An inactive license can generally be reactivated by documenting the required PDPs and paying the renewal fee. An invalid license may require additional steps.

Don't Let It Lapse

The consequences of an expired Professional License extend beyond paperwork. Districts are required to verify license status, and an inactive credential can result in being pulled from classroom assignments mid-year.
