The short version: Louisiana law does not require what most people assume it requires, and it does require something most people overlook entirely depending on which parish you practice in.

Stamps and Seals: What the Law Actually Says

Under Louisiana Administrative Code Title 46, Part XLVI, Section 131, a notary's signature legally serves as their seal. A physical rubber stamp or embosser is not mandated by statute to validate a traditional notarial act.

That's the law. In practice, it's more complicated. Recording offices, title companies, and banks across Louisiana routinely expect a physical stamp showing:

• Your full legal name
• Your notary ID number
• "State of Louisiana"

If you present a document without a visible stamp, you may face pushback — not because the document is legally defective, but because the processing clerk expects to see one. Most working notaries carry a rubber stamp as standard equipment regardless of what the statute technically requires.

For remote online notarization, the rules change entirely. RON notaries must use an electronic seal provided through their approved technology platform. This is a separate, mandatory requirement under the RON statutes.

Journal Requirements: The Orleans Parish Exception

This is where Louisiana creates a genuine compliance trap for the uninformed.

In 63 of Louisiana's 64 parishes, traditional paper notaries have no legal obligation to maintain a notary journal. You can keep one voluntarily (and many do for liability protection), but the state does not require it.

Orleans Parish is the exception. Notaries commissioned in Orleans Parish are legally required to maintain a physical, bound record journal with numbered pages documenting their notarial acts. This is not optional and not a best-practice recommendation — it is a statutory mandate.

If you practice in Orleans Parish or hold a dual commission that includes Orleans Parish, budget for a proper bound journal from the start.

What to Actually Buy

Once your commission is active and your status shows in the Secretary of State's database, here is a practical supply list:

Required:

• $50,000 surety bond (you already have this from the commissioning process — renewal every five years)

Expected by industry (not legally mandated for traditional notarization):

• Rubber stamp with your name, ID number, and "State of Louisiana"
• A professional-quality stamp pad if using a self-inking model

Required for Orleans Parish only:

• Bound notary journal with pre-numbered pages

Required for RON notaries:

• Electronic seal (through your approved RON platform)
• Digital signature certificate
• Audio-video recording capability (platform-provided)

Optional but recommended:

• Thumbprint pad for identity verification (not legally required)
• A voluntary journal even outside Orleans Parish, for your own records and liability protection

Make sure any stamp you order includes your assigned notary ID number — you will not have this number until after the Secretary of State issues your commission, so do not order stamps before your commission is active.

Some vendors sell "Louisiana notary kits" that bundle stamps, journals, and seal embossers together. You do not need an embosser for traditional Louisiana notarization. If you're only performing in-person acts outside Orleans Parish, a stamp and a reliable pen are all you truly need.
