Kentucky Master Electrician Requirements

What the Master License Authorizes

The Master Electrician license is the senior technical credential in Kentucky. It certifies you to assume responsible charge of electrical installations — meaning you can design, plan, and supervise commercial, industrial, and residential electrical work. Every contracting firm must designate at least one active Master Electrician as its qualifying technical agent.

The critical distinction from Journeyman: a Master can supervise crews and serve as the qualifying agent for a contractor license. A Journeyman can work unsupervised but cannot take on these supervisory and business roles.

The 16,000-Hour Requirement

You need 16,000 total hours of verifiable electrical trade experience since your 16th birthday. These are cumulative — your apprenticeship hours and journeyman-level hours both count toward the total. Kentucky uses the same 1,600-hours-per-year definition as the journeyman pathway.

You must also have held an active Journeyman (Electrician) license for two years before applying for the Master license.

Three routes to satisfy the requirement:

Experience only (8 years): 16,000+ hours of documented field work with no classroom requirement.

Experience plus approved training (6 years): 9,600 hours of field experience combined with 576 hours of DHBC-approved classroom instruction. If you already used the classroom credit to shorten your Journeyman pathway, the same 576 hours satisfy this requirement — you do not need a second round of training.

Experience plus associate degree (5 years): 8,000 hours of field experience combined with an AAS or technical diploma in electrical technology from a regionally or nationally accredited institution. As with the Journeyman pathway, HB 444 expanded this to accept any regionally or nationally accredited college, not just KCTCS programs.

Practical Timeline

The additional period after earning a Journeyman license depends on the pathway used initially:

• Experience-only Journeyman (6 years, 8,000 hours) → needs 2 more years to reach the 8-year Master pathway
• Training pathway Journeyman (4 years, 6,400 hours) → needs 2 more years to reach the 6-year Master pathway
• Degree pathway Journeyman (3 years, 4,800 hours) → needs 2 more years to reach the 5-year Master pathway

The pathway determines the required total experience and education; the 1,600-hour-per-year cap limits how quickly hours can be counted.

The Master Exam

The Master exam is longer and more demanding than the Journeyman version. Through Prov, it's 100 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours ($80 registration). Through Pearson VUE/ICC (exam ICC 701), it's 100 questions in 5 hours ($100 registration). Passing score is 70%.

The exam covers advanced NEC code interpretation, system design, load calculations, and supervisory responsibilities — topics that go beyond the installation-focused Journeyman test.

Same application process: submit a new Form EL-3 selecting the Master designation, pay the $200 biennial fee, provide a new passport photo and notarized affidavits covering the additional supervisory-level hours.

Why It Matters for Contracting

If your goal is to open your own electrical contracting business, the Master license is the prerequisite. Under KRS Chapter 227A, an Electrical Contractor license requires a designated qualifying Master. No Master on staff means no contractor license — and no ability to bid projects or pull permits.
