Where to Run the Lookup

Kentucky's Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (DHBC) maintains the official license verification database at dhbc.ky.gov. This is the only authoritative source — third-party lookup sites pull from this same data but may be delayed or incomplete.

The DHBC also operates the SmartGov portal for online permitting and application tracking. If you're checking on your own application status, SmartGov is where your profile shows "pending examination" once the state approves your paperwork.

What the Database Shows

A standard lookup returns the license classification (Electrician, Master Electrician, or Electrical Contractor), the license number, the holder's name, and the current status — active, inactive, or expired. For contractor licenses, you can also see whether the business has a designated qualifying Master Electrician on file.

What it does not show: apprentice registrations. The Registered Apprentice tier is managed through the Kentucky Labor Cabinet and the U.S. Department of Labor, not the DHBC. If you're trying to verify that your employer has registered you as an apprentice, you need to contact the Labor Cabinet directly.

Why Homeowners and General Contractors Check

If you're hiring an electrician in Kentucky, the lookup tells you whether they hold a valid personal trade license — but that alone doesn't confirm they can pull permits in your city. Kentucky separates state licensing from local permitting. A journeyman with an active state license still can't pull permits or contract directly with the public. For contractor-performed work, only a licensed Electrical Contractor (who employs a qualifying Master) has that authority; homeowner exemptions are separate.

For work in Louisville or Lexington, the contractor also needs a local business registration. Louisville requires either a Type A or Type B contractor classification through the Construction Review division. Lexington requires registration through the LFUCG Division of Building Inspection plus a local business license.

Checking License Status Before Hiring

Before signing a contract for electrical work, verify three things:

1. The individual's personal license is active in the DHBC database (Journeyman or Master)
2. The contracting business holds an active Electrical Contractor license with a designated Master
3. The business is registered with the local building department where the work will be performed

A lapsed license — even by a single day past the biennial renewal deadline — means the person legally cannot perform electrical work. Under KRS Chapter 227A, working with an inactive credential is grounds for immediate suspension or permanent revocation.

For Licensees Checking Their Own Record

If your lookup shows "inactive" and you didn't request that status, it usually means a renewal was missed. Kentucky moved to biennial renewals under HB 444, with expiration tied to the last day of your birth month in the second year of the cycle. Late renewals incur a $50 penalty, and reinstatement after a lapse of more than 60 days but less than three years doubles the standard renewal fee.
