What Iowa Requires for Renewal

Iowa teaching licenses renew on a five-year cycle. The renewal requirements are straightforward, but the penalties for missing the deadline are steep — and they hit both you and your school district.

Credit Requirements by License Type

Standard Teaching License holders must complete six Licensure Renewal Credits (LRCs) during the five-year term.

Master Educator License holders must complete four LRCs during the five-year term.

One graduate-level semester credit from an accredited institution equals one LRC. Professional development through authorized providers also counts, with the conversion depending on the provider's approved structure.

Where to Earn Renewal Credits

Iowa's Area Education Agencies (AEAs) are the most accessible option for working teachers. AEA Learning Online and regional AEA offices offer approved professional development that counts toward LRCs. Non-district users typically pay $25 per training session.

Graduate coursework from any regionally accredited college or university counts at the one-semester-credit-to-one-LRC ratio. Many Iowa teachers combine AEA trainings with graduate courses to meet their six-credit requirement.

There's an important distinction: local school district professional development hours do not count toward renewal credits unless the specific training has been officially approved for LRC credit through an authorized provider. In-service days alone won't satisfy the requirement.

The 10-Year Advanced Degree Waiver

If you hold a master's degree or higher and have at least ten years of successful teaching experience, you qualify for a significant break:

• Reduced renewal fee of $50 (instead of the standard $85)
• Exempt from completing the standard LRC requirements
• Must still complete mandatory Child Abuse and Dependent Adult Abuse reporter training
• Must submit verification of teaching experience

This waiver is available for both Standard and Master Educator license renewals. You apply through the BoEE portal and upload documentation of your degree and experience history.

Mandatory Reporter Training

Regardless of your license type or years of experience, every renewal requires current Child Abuse and Dependent Adult Abuse mandatory reporter training through the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). You must have completed the full separate two-hour courses (not just refresher modules) after July 1, 2019. Upload both completion certificates to the BoEE portal.

Late Renewal Penalties

Missing your renewal deadline triggers automatic penalties:

• $25 per month late fee, added to the standard $85 renewal fee
• Late fees are capped at $150 total
• Maximum total cost for an extremely late renewal: $235 ($85 + $150)

But the financial penalty isn't the worst part. If your license expires, you must stop teaching immediately. Operating a classroom with an expired credential is a violation of the Code of Professional Conduct, and the BoEE can impose a separate $100-per-month penalty (capped at $500) for teaching without a valid license. This penalty applies to both the individual teacher and the employing school district.

The Renewal Timeline

The BoEE recommends submitting renewal applications at least eight weeks before your expiration date. Starting July 1, 2026, all renewal applications must also include verified proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful work authorization — a new requirement that adds a documentation step to the process.

How to Submit

Log into the BoEE licensure portal, select the renewal application for your license type, upload your transcripts or LRC completion certificates, your mandatory reporter training certificates, and any experience verification (if using the 10-year waiver). Pay the fee and submit.

Processing takes four to six weeks. Submit before the expiration date. If the license expires, you must stop teaching until you hold a valid credential or permit; late fees begin after expiration.
