Iowa Elementary and Middle School Teacher Certification

Getting certified to teach elementary or middle school in Iowa comes down to which endorsement codes you carry on your license. Iowa does not issue a generic "elementary license" or "middle school license" — it issues a teaching license with specific endorsements attached, and those endorsements define which grades and subjects you are authorized to teach. Choosing the wrong endorsement path can lock you out of the positions you actually want.

Elementary Endorsement: K-6

The primary endorsement for elementary classrooms is Endorsement #102 — Elementary Classroom (K-6). This endorsement authorizes you to serve as a self-contained classroom teacher for kindergarten through sixth grade, covering all core subjects. It is the most common endorsement for teachers who want a traditional elementary role.

Iowa does not list a generic K-8 elementary classroom endorsement. Broader grade-level flexibility instead depends on the specific K-8 subject or role endorsements attached to your license, so check the endorsement requirements before choosing a program.

The endorsement requires completion of an approved educator preparation program that includes the elementary education core — typically courses in literacy instruction, mathematics methods, science methods, social studies methods, and elementary classroom management. You also need the standard 14 weeks of student teaching at the elementary level, within the grade band your endorsement covers.

Middle School Endorsements: The 5-8 Band

Iowa handles middle school certification through subject-specific endorsements in the 5-12 grade band rather than a standalone "middle school" endorsement. If you want to teach a specific subject at the middle school level — say, 7th grade science or 8th grade math — you need the corresponding secondary endorsement:

• Endorsement #143 — Mathematics (5-12)
• Endorsement #1541 — Science - Basic (5-12)
• Endorsement #120 — English/Language Arts (5-12)
• Endorsement #186 — Social Sciences - All (5-12)

These endorsements require a content-area major or its equivalent in semester hours, plus secondary methods coursework and student teaching at the secondary level.

The practical consequence is that middle school teachers in Iowa typically hold either one or more K-8 subject endorsements (for broader coverage) or one or more 5-12 subject endorsements (which authorize single-subject instruction at the middle and high school levels). The choice depends on whether you want to be a generalist or a content specialist.

Testing Requirements by Grade Level

Iowa's testing requirements vary based on your endorsement area. Graduates of approved Iowa-based traditional educator preparation programs have been exempt from state-level licensing exams for initial certification since 2022. However, certain endorsement areas still trigger testing requirements:

Elementary, early childhood, special education, and reading specialist endorsements require passing the Pearson Foundations of Reading Test (Test Code 890). This is a four-hour exam with 100 multiple-choice questions and two written responses, with a passing score of 240. The test costs $139 per attempt.

Secondary 5-12 endorsements may require Praxis Subject Assessments through ETS, depending on your pathway. Traditional Iowa EPP graduates are exempt, but career changers and out-of-state applicants with fewer than three years of experience may need to submit passing Praxis scores.

If you are pursuing an elementary endorsement, expect to take the Foundations of Reading Test. If you are going the 5-12 subject endorsement route for middle school, your testing profile depends on your pathway — traditional graduates are exempt; alternative pathway candidates are not.

Program Selection for Elementary vs. Middle School

Approved Iowa educator preparation programs offer elementary education tracks, but availability varies by institution. The major public universities — University of Iowa, Iowa State, University of Northern Iowa — all have well-established elementary programs. UNI's program is often cited as the state's largest producer of elementary-certified teachers.

For middle school, the path depends on whether you pursue broader K-8 subject coverage or a subject-specialist role through a 5-12 endorsement. If you want to teach middle school math specifically, you would complete a mathematics education program with the 5-12 endorsement rather than an elementary program. Some universities offer middle-level education concentrations within their elementary programs, but the endorsement on your license is what ultimately determines your teaching authority.

Career changers who want to teach at the elementary level face a specific constraint: the Teacher Intern License (through RAPIL, Drake, or Morningside) is limited to secondary endorsements (5-12 grade bands). If you hold a non-education bachelor's degree and want to teach K-6 elementary, the traditional EPP route — completing a post-baccalaureate program with elementary student teaching — is your primary pathway. The HF 255 alternative pathway may cover some elementary endorsement areas depending on the approved provider, but verify this with the IDOE before enrolling.

Adding an Elementary or Middle School Endorsement Later

If you already hold an Iowa teaching license and want to add a new grade-level endorsement, you can do so through two paths: completing an approved endorsement program at an Iowa institution, or submitting transcripts for a direct BoEE course-by-course audit. The direct audit costs $60 for transcript evaluation plus $50 to add the endorsement.

For the K-6 endorsement, the coursework requirements are substantial — you essentially need the full elementary education core if your original program was secondary-focused. Adding a 5-12 subject endorsement for middle school instruction requires the equivalent of a content major in that subject area, plus secondary methods coursework.

If you are currently licensed but need to teach outside your endorsed area while completing additional coursework, Iowa offers the Class B Conditional License. This temporary two-year credential requires that you have completed at least 50% of the target endorsement's coursework and have a written job offer from an employing district.
