Idaho Provisional Journeyman Electrician: The 6-Month Transitional License

Who the Provisional License Is For

The Provisional Journeyman credential exists for one specific situation: you have completed Idaho's 16,000-hour experience-only pathway but have not yet passed the NASCLA trade exam. This license lets you keep working legally while you prepare for and schedule the test. It is not available to apprentices still accumulating hours or to candidates on the schooling pathway (8,000 hours + 576 classroom hours) — those pathways have their own progression.

The typical candidate is an experienced out-of-state electrician who has relocated to Idaho and whose hours have been verified by DOPL, but who needs time to study for and sit the Idaho-specific exam.

Fees and Terms

The Provisional Journeyman license costs $70 total: a $15 processing fee and a $55 license fee. It is valid for an initial six months from the date of issue. DOPL permits a one-time renewal for an additional six months, subject to the conditions described below.

Supervision Restrictions

Unlike a full Journeyman license, the provisional credential comes with mandatory supervision. You can perform electrical installations, but only under the constant, on-the-job supervision of a licensed Master or Journeyman electrician who is physically present on the job site. You cannot supervise apprentices, pull permits under your own credential, or work independently.

This restriction matters for contractors staffing jobs. A provisional holder counts as an additional worker on the crew, not as the supervising electrician — they do not help with apprentice-to-supervisor ratio compliance.

The One-Time Renewal

DOPL permits a single renewal of the Provisional Journeyman license for an additional six months, at a $45 renewal fee. To qualify, you must prove one of two things: you attempted and failed the exam during the initial six-month term, or you were prevented from testing by documented exceptional circumstances.

The renewal is truly one-time. If you burn through the second six-month window without passing the exam, the provisional license expires. At that point, you have no active Idaho credential and cannot work legally in the field until you pass the exam and complete the full Journeyman license application.

What Happens If You Fail

Failing the exam while holding a provisional license does not immediately end your ability to work — the license remains active until its expiration date. But you need to reschedule through PSI promptly. Each retake costs another $75, and PSI testing center slots in Boise, Coeur d'Alene, and Pocatello can fill four to six weeks out. If your provisional term has three months left and you fail, schedule the retake immediately rather than waiting.

Failing also opens the door to the one-time renewal, so it is not catastrophic. The scenario that creates real problems is running out the clock without ever sitting for the exam — that leaves you with an expired provisional and no documented exam attempt, which makes the renewal harder to justify to DOPL.

Transitioning to a Full Journeyman License

Once you pass the NASCLA Journeyman exam with a 70% or higher score, log into your DOPL account and submit the final Journeyman application. After DOPL approves the application, you can work as a full Journeyman without the provisional supervision restrictions. You can then work independently, supervise apprentices, and begin counting the four years of active Journeyman experience required for the Master Electrician pathway.
