Idaho Daycare License Renewal — Timeline, Documents, and RISE Steps

When Renewal Happens

Idaho daycare licenses are issued for a fixed term. The state is required by Idaho Code § 39-1106(2) to send you renewal forms at least 90 days before your license expires. Watch RISE for the forms and follow IdahoSTARS' current delivery instructions as your expiration date approaches.

The 90-day window is your buffer. Starting promptly when you receive the notice gives you the best margin for resolving any documentation gaps.

What You Need to Submit

The renewal package is lighter than your initial application, but it still requires current documentation:

• Updated background checks — if any household member's clearance has expired or if a new person age 13 or older has moved into the home since your last renewal, you must submit fresh background check applications through the DHW Background Check Unit
• Current CPR/First Aid certification — your in-person pediatric CPR and first aid card must be valid through the next licensing period; expired certifications block renewal
• Continuing education transcript — your RISE professional development transcript must show the required training hours completed (4 hours for standard licensees, 12 for ICCP providers)
• Updated fire inspection clearance — your local fire department or fire district must have conducted an annual inspection; the report must be current
• Health district re-inspection — your regional public health district conducts an annual health and safety inspection; the clearance letter must be on file

All of these documents should already be uploaded to your RISE profile if you have been maintaining compliance throughout the year. Renewal is essentially a verification that your ongoing compliance documentation is current and complete.

The RISE Renewal Workflow

1. Log into your RISE account and navigate to the renewal section when the 90-day notification appears
2. Review the pre-populated information — your facility details, capacity, and contact information — and correct anything that has changed
3. Confirm that all required documents (background clearances, CPR card, training transcript, inspection reports) are current in your "My Documents" section
4. Submit the renewal application through the portal
5. IdahoSTARS staff review your submission and flag any gaps — respond to requests promptly to avoid delays
6. Upon approval, your renewed license is issued and your RISE profile updates to reflect the new expiration date

What Happens if Your License Expires

Do not provide paid care under an expired license. If your license expires before renewal is complete, contact IdahoSTARS or DHW immediately about the applicable process. For ICCP providers, an expired license can interrupt program participation; follow current ICCP instructions.

If renewal is not complete by expiration, contact IdahoSTARS or DHW about the applicable reinstatement or reapplication process; do not assume a grace period.

Preventing Renewal Surprises

The providers who get caught off guard by renewal are almost always the ones who let compliance documentation lapse during the year. An expired CPR card discovered two weeks before renewal means scrambling to find an in-person class with open spots — and fully online CPR courses are not accepted in Idaho.
