Two Exams, Two Credentials

Wyoming's municipal licensing boards require passing an approved trade exam before they'll issue a Master or Journeyman mechanical credential. ICC exams are the common standard. Two exams cover the mechanical trade:

ICC G29-N (Master Mechanical): The standard for Master qualification in Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, and Gillette. Also designated as F29 in some ICC catalogs.

ICC G31-N (Journeyman Mechanical): The standard for Journeyman qualification. Casper accepts either the G31-N or G29-N for journeyman applicants — passing the harder Master exam satisfies the Journeyman requirement there.

Both exams are administered through Pearson VUE testing centers. You can schedule online via the MyICC portal or call Pearson VUE at 877-234-6082.

Master Mechanical Exam (G29-N) — What to Expect

The exam covers general mechanical regulations, chimney and venting systems, exhaust and ventilation duct design, combustion air calculations, appliance installation, and fuel gas supply systems. You're allowed to bring the IMC and IFGC reference books into the testing room — it's open-book, so the challenge isn't memorization. It's knowing where to find answers quickly across two code books within a four-hour window.

Journeyman Mechanical Exam (G31-N)

The Journeyman exam covers the same technical domains as the Master exam but in a shorter format. With half the questions and three hours instead of four, the time pressure per question is similar.

Registration and Testing Logistics

Scheduling: Register through the MyICC portal or Pearson VUE. Testing is available at physical Pearson VUE centers in Wyoming or through approved online proctoring.

Identification: Bring two forms of valid ID on exam day. The primary ID must be government-issued photo identification (driver's license, state ID, or passport) with your legal name exactly matching your registration. The secondary ID must show your name and signature.

ADA accommodations: Candidates requiring testing accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act must submit documentation to the ICC Trades Exam Administration at least 30 days before the planned test date.

Pre-approval: Some cities require experience verification before they'll authorize you to take the exam. Casper's Contractor's Board of License and Appeals reviews experience records and grants testing eligibility. Check with your target city's building department before scheduling — if they require pre-approval and you test without it, the exam result may not be accepted.

What Happens When You Fail

Failed attempts require payment of the full exam fee for each retake, subject to a standard waiting period set by Pearson VUE. Check the current Pearson VUE and local-board rules for any retake limits; each attempt costs the applicable exam fee and requires another scheduled testing session.

The most common failure mode isn't lack of knowledge — it's running out of time because you can't navigate the reference books efficiently. Contractors who tab and index their IMC and IFGC copies before the exam consistently outperform those who don't.

City-Specific Exam Acceptance

Most Wyoming cities accept the ICC national standard exams, but some also accept the Wyoming Association of Municipalities (WAM) exam as an equivalent. Cheyenne and Laramie explicitly accept both the ICC and WAM exams for Master and Journeyman credentials.

If you're applying through Casper's reciprocal license program — using an existing credential from another Wyoming city — you must prove your original license was based on an exam comparable to Casper's standards. Licenses issued by smaller towns without ICC-equivalent testing may not qualify for reciprocity.

Exam Prep vs. Licensing Guidance

ICC exam preparation courses (ranging from $295 to $581) focus on the technical content — code interpretation, system design, calculation methods. They don't cover the administrative side: municipal licensing applications, insurance requirements, fee schedules, or permit procedures.
