Contractor license schools in California charge anywhere from $395 to $1,499 for exam prep packages. Most bundle a Law & Business course with a classification-specific trade review. Some add online streaming, practice tests, and "guarantee" passes — with fine print requiring you to attend every session before qualifying for a retake.

These courses exist because the CSLB exams are closed-book, and many applicants — especially experienced tradespeople who have not taken a formal test in years — feel unprepared for the format. The question is whether the price matches the value.

What the Courses Cover

A typical CSLB exam prep course splits into two sections:

Law & Business is where most courses earn their keep. The exam tests contractors on the Business and Professions Code, mechanics lien deadlines, preliminary notice requirements, contract law, financial statements, and Cal/OSHA safety standards. Experienced plumbers rarely encounter this material on the job, so the structured review has real value.

C-36 Trade Review covers California Plumbing Code specifics: pipe sizing tables, fixture unit calculations, DWV grade requirements, gas piping rules, and backflow prevention standards. If you have been doing plumbing work for four or more years, most of this material is familiar. The value here is learning the code section numbers and California-specific requirements that differ from national standards.

The Cost-Benefit Calculation

A $395 weekend crash course focused on Law & Business is reasonable for most applicants. You get structured review of material you probably do not know well, and failing the exam costs $60 per retake plus weeks of delay.

A $1,200 to $1,499 comprehensive package that includes trade review, streaming access, and practice tests is harder to justify if you are an experienced journeyman. You already know how to size pipe and install a water heater. Paying $1,499 to review material you use daily is expensive insurance against exam anxiety.

Self-Study Alternatives

Many applicants pass both exams without a formal course. The core study materials are:

• A current edition of the California Plumbing Code (CPC) — the trade exam draws directly from this code. Tab and highlight the key sections on pipe sizing, venting, drainage, and gas piping.
• The CSLB Law & Business Reference Guide — the CSLB publishes a study outline listing the topics covered on the exam. Use it as your checklist.
• Practice tests — several publishers sell CSLB-style practice question banks for $30 to $80. These are useful for getting comfortable with the multiple-choice format and identifying weak areas.

The total self-study cost is typically $100 to $200 for code books and practice tests — a fraction of a formal course.
