Which Plumbing Code Does Alaska Follow?

This is the code edition that governs all trade licensing exams, mechanical inspections, and installation standards administered by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOLWD) Mechanical Inspection Section.

The UPC distinction matters because many states use the International Plumbing Code (IPC) instead. • Fuel gas piping is governed by the National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) alongside the UPC, and requires a separate Plumber Gas (PG) certificate or journeyman credential
• Septic and on-site wastewater systems fall under the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) regulations at 18 AAC 72, not the UPC
• Water service connections in Anchorage require coordination with the Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility (AWWU), which has its own permitting process separate from UPC compliance
