The Biennial Renewal Cycle

Alaska plumber journeyman Certificates of Fitness renew every two years. The renewal fee is $200, submitted to the DOLWD Mechanical Inspection Section. Miss the window, and the consequences escalate quickly.

16 Hours of Continuing Education — With a Mandatory Split

Renewal isn't just a fee and a form. You need to complete 16 hours of approved continuing education (CE) before your renewal application, and the state enforces a specific split:

• Minimum 8 hours covering updates to the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC)
• Remaining 8 hours can cover general industry topics — safety, business practices, new technologies, environmental regulations

The UPC requirement is non-negotiable. You can't fill all 16 hours with general industry courses. And generic "plumbing CE" courses that don't specifically address UPC updates won't satisfy the code-hour requirement, even if the content overlaps.

Where to Get CE Hours

Possible CE sources include:

• Accredited trade schools and technical colleges
• Union JATC training programs (UA Local 367, Local 375)
• State-approved online CE providers
• Manufacturer training programs (for general hours, not code hours)
• Industry association workshops and conferences

When choosing a provider, verify in advance that their UPC-specific courses are accepted by DOLWD for the code-hour requirement. The cheapest generic online course won't help if it doesn't count toward the 8-hour UPC minimum.

What Happens If You Lapse

Less than two years expired: Follow DOLWD's current late-renewal instructions and confirm any documentation or CE required before filing.

More than two years expired: A Journeyman COF renewal submitted more than two years after expiration requires re-testing. You must re-document your experience and retake the 4-hour open-book journeyman exam, paying the $50 application fee and $200 certificate fee.

This two-year cliff is the single biggest reason plumbers lose their credentials. If you're between jobs, retired temporarily, or working out of state, it's almost always cheaper to pay the $200 renewal and complete the CE hours than to let the license lapse and restart the exam process.

Restricted Certifications Follow the Same Pattern

The renewal structure for restricted credentials — Plumber Gas (PG) and Plumber Utility (PU) — includes a $200 biennial renewal fee. The 16-hour split above is stated for Journeyman COF renewal; check DOLWD's current instructions for PG and PU. The out-of-state reciprocal COF also renews biennially for $200.

Trainee COFs renew annually (not biennially), so do not apply the Journeyman's biennial schedule to them; confirm current DOLWD filing requirements.

Don't Wait Until the Last Minute

Processing times at DOLWD can stretch during busy periods. Submit your renewal application and CE documentation well before expiration — not the week of. A gap between your old certificate expiring and your renewal being processed means you technically cannot perform plumbing work, and any employer audit during that window creates a compliance problem for your contractor.
